Hi everyone, I hope this is not too stupid a question. For a while now, I've wanted to make vids and I'm finally getting around to it. I've done a lot of research on what software works best, what formats to use, etc. I came across this guide that suggests formatting MKV files as MJPEG AVI for editing, but doesn't really explain why (further Googling says it has something to do with MJPEG being relatively lossless?). As the information seems dated, I'm wondering if this is still the standard way of doing things, or is there a more efficient codec to use? Or even, why can't I just dump the MKV file right into my editor if it accepts it and start working? I understand that I need to use as high quality footage as possible, so is it just a matter of quality retention or is it something else? Just trying to make sense of which direcion I should go in, with as few steps along the way as necessary. Thanks.

Hi all!

I want to get back into vidding, after being out of it for eight years (!).  I have Premiere loaded back up again, and now I need the rest of the software.  Back in the day I used the AMVapp to rip my DVDs and used AviSynth scripts to edit the VOB files in Premiere.  Is this still the gold standard for getting the best quality with live action vidding?  The thing that I liked was the VOB files were relatively small, but when I look back at my vids I see they haven't aged as well as I'd like in terms of quality and I don't know if that's due to the codec I used to compress the finals (WMV and Xvid for the most part, ranging from 7 to 94mb) or if it's due to something else.

I know there are people that rip their source into uncompressed clips and edit with those, is that better?  Easier than messing with the extra steps?  Do those types of programs deinterlace footage, and the other things that AviSynth can do (adjust aspect ratios, and so on)?

My head is kinda swimming at the options.

So the last time I did a vid was back in 2004. I used to use DVD decrypter but I read in another post that due to its age, it can't really keep up with some of the new DVDs. I don't mind having to pay for a program as long as the price isn't insane, but is there anything out there compatible with Windows 7 that is easy to use? I haven't done this in years so I pretty much have the training wheels back on. :(

I'm looking for up-to-date how-to guides for vidding on a Mac. Everything I'm finding is very old, at least for fan vid-specific instructions. I'm planning to learn Adobe Premiere. I've been using Final Cut Express, but it isn't compatible with the newest Mac OS. I'm not tech savvy, so the more detailed and specific, the better.

Is the current version of iMovie any good for making fan vids? I've never tried to use it.

I am going to be advising someone on getting started in vidding, and I realized that the tools I use are no longer available. I am comfortable using them, but I need to recommend software that can be purchased/downloaded now, and I wanted to see what others were using.

In particular -

1) ripping raw content: what do you use, and what media is it applicable for? (i.e., DVDs, CDs, Blue-ray, etc.)

2) converting raw vob files to usable clips: what software do you use, and what format do you output it in? Dos the software handle aspect ratio or do you have to adjust in the vidding software?

3) what software do you use to create vids? How easy is it for a beginner? How does it handle correcting aspect ratio on the output? What types of source formats does it allow? (i.e., wav or mp3 or something else for audio, and what kind of video files?)

4) compressing the output file - do you generate big for a master file and then compress into smaller format (i.e. divx) for uploading? Do you generate a small file from within your vidding program? And again, how does it handle that pesky aspect ratio issue?

5) separating audio and visual for conventions/dvds - do you use the Llamaenc or something else?

Thanks for the input! Let me know if there is anything else you think a newbie might need to get started.

Hi, I'm relatively new to vidding (made my first fanvid in April this year, and I've only used iMovie '11 so far), and I'm interested in stepping up my game by a teeny tiny amount. I'm hoping y'all can make me a recommendation for my next software to try which fits what I'm looking for, described below.

Desired specs )

Thanks in advance for any recs you may have! :)

Hi - not a vidder, but interested in the vidding process.

I'd like to host a vidding challenge for my fandom (this started with a song I thought would be great for a vid), and wanted some input in order to make this fun for the people who take up the challenge.

So, without further ado -
  • How long would you need (4 min song)?
  • Does working with a predetermined song work for you, or turn you off?
  • What do you find fun about a challenge? Not fun?
  • What were some of the positives and negatives of past challenges you've run across?
  • Anything I've left off that I should know?
Thanks!

Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to compress VOB files? I'm making a video from clips I've made using DVD Shrink and DVDFab, but the files are just too large to work with in any functional capacity. I've heard HandBrake is a good way to go, as well as SUPER and AutoGordianKnot... Do you have a favorite?

I'm working on a PC and using Pinnacle to make the actual vid (it handles the VOB files well but does not compress them, though the vid it turns out is AVI. I am concerned because I did a test run vid made up of exactly two clips and a ten second mp3, and the file ended up at 48.3 MB).

Thank you so much!

I am new to vidding and have been using DVD Shrink to reauthor scenes from my movies, but I have come up against some newer disks that DVD Shrink can't analyze/rip. So I got a trial version of DVDFab 8 on a suggestion from someone in the community.

I was able to rip the movie I'm working on, but I'm having trouble reauthoring specific scenes using the trial version, and I can't find the correct tutorial that deals with this. I would appreciate any tips from people more familiar with this program. Also, I see the program slaps a logo on the ripped files every couple of minutes... any way to get rid of that? (I suspect I just have to buy the real program to keep it from doing that.)

If not, any better reauthoring programs you can suggest? ^___^ Thank you so much!

I recently tried making my own project settings in Premiere using a guide someone made -- but it came out very wrong and I've been wary of it since. But I think the time has come to try again -- I'm dealing with source that's 23 fps and the lowest pre-set Premiere offers is 25 fps. I was silly and tried to go ahead anyway, but exported video isn't clean and pretty as I'd like it. I'm going to try to make a project specs specific to my source and I'd love it if any of you have advice or guides on how that's done. The source for this project is 576x320 and 23 frames/second.

I've made a few fanvids over the years, but they've never really been all that great. They're usually very basic and kind of n00b looking and eventually I gave up. I want to get into it again, hopefully with enough knowledge to make fairly decent vids. Does anyone here have any tips or links to tutorials for editting techniques and all that stuff? I know the basics of the program, I'd just like to take it a step further and I'm having a little bit of difficulty. Any advice and tips will help. Thanks!

Hey vidders,

I'm very new to this process, so of course the information out there is pretty overwhelming. I'm hoping you can help me decide my best choice as far as which program to use, how to go about ripping DVD files, codecs, etc.

I have both Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD. As far as making/editing clips, I really like Premiere (although it's possible that Vegas' trimmer is just as easy to use and I just can't figure it out...). I'm confused about ripping DVDs. Apparently Premiere doesn't like XviD/DivX, so I've been trying to avoid that.

What I've done is ripped a disc of episodes (S1 of Supernatural, not that it matters much) using CloneDVD5, which of course gave me .vob files. I looked around the internet a bit, and learned that Premiere will accept .vob files if you change the extension to .mpg, and it worked. I was able to import a .vob file and played around with editing it as well. The only problem I ran into is that the episodes were split into more than one .vob file - is that something my DVD ripper did, and if so, how can I fix it?

The big problem is that it seems too easy. Will I have trouble exporting/getting my finished vid onto the internet if the clips used were edited as .vob/.mpg files?

Basically I'm wondering if I should stick with Premiere, and if so, keep editing as .mpg or try to convert my .vob files into something else. Or, should I just convert them into DivX files and learn how to use Vegas? I realize that what program you use is just a preference issue, but I don't want further complications down the line.

Thanks!

Hello! I'm tentatively stepping into vidding waters, and having to hold my breath is making me very, very dizzy.

Before I ask my two questions: I currently have Windows Live Movie Maker, which appears to be quite different (looking at tutorial screencaps) from plain Windows Movie Maker. I am not currently willing or able to spend money on vidding, so I'll have to stick to free software. Though I'd like to start small and plain, I'm definitely interested in learning about the ins and outs of vidding eventually. I've finally decided to vid due to a severe lack of fanvids for The Bourne Trilogy, which I've fallen in love with.

Now for my questions! I've been looking through tutorials, links lists, and walk-throughs most of the morning, and there are two things that are pretty much the only things I want to know right now and are the only things I'm either completely missing or am just too clueless in tech-speak to understand are there.

1) How do you make small clips out of a movie-length video for assembly into a fanvid? Is there any specific software I'm missing that is good for this?

2) How do I take the audio (dialogue, soundtrack music, etc.) off the clips?

Thank you so much for any help!

Hi! I just made my first vid ever. I have some questions about the process, but didn't think to ask until after I'd uploaded it to YouTube.

So, here's the vid.

Bonnie - Witch (TVD)

I might be a little rough but, hey, I'm new. :-D

One of my questions is should I have put credits at the end? I thought about it, but liked the way the vid ended right where it did. But I wonder if credits are the proper "protocol."

Also, YouTube won't let me embed my vid. I'm wondering if it's because there's a copyright notice on the vid. Which I don't get because there are plenty of vids in the same fandom on the site, and embedding works fine for them.

If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Hello all, I'm a newbie vidder and I've been poking around Memories. I've seen several posts telling me to find the beat and cut three frames ahead. Okay, find the beat, no problem. Here's the question that makes me feel like an idiot.

How do I cut "three frames" ahead? I guess what I mean is, How do I know I have three frames? I'm using WMM.

Thanks!

I've just posted a 'How To' guide which gives advice about at the issues I faced when I first opened Windows MovieMaker, knowing nothing at all about the practical side of vidding. The result is:

The Gumby's Guide to Vidding

It's very basic, with a focus on freeware, and it's not fandom specific. Topics covered include: editors, clippers, format converters, video players, paint packages, audio software and hosting. Feedback and advice welcome.

Hey all :) I have a question, and feel free to throw things at me if this isn't allowed, but I figured I'd ask. I am trying to rip about six minutes from the middle of a video file, but for some reason it comes out with the the video all messed up. I tried going back and ripping the first five minutes and that worked perfectly. I'm so technically illiterate lol, does anyone here maybe know why it's not letting me rip the middle part? Do I need to set a specific video parameters? (I'm using Xilisoft video converter, if that helps any.) Thanks for any help, you guys are awesome :)

I recently downloaded my first torrent with Vuze. It downloaded as an aen (R0) file, so I went to "Select a program to open the file in" and picked Windows Movie Maker. It's now supposed to open in Movie Maker- it definitely recognizes that as the default program- but when I try to open it, it tells me that the codec required to play the file is not installed on my computer. Do I need to download something? If so, what?
