Hi everyone, I hope this is not too stupid a question. For a while now, I've wanted to make vids and I'm finally getting around to it. I've done a lot of research on what software works best, what formats to use, etc. I came across this guide that suggests formatting MKV files as MJPEG AVI for editing, but doesn't really explain why (further Googling says it has something to do with MJPEG being relatively lossless?). As the information seems dated, I'm wondering if this is still the standard way of doing things, or is there a more efficient codec to use? Or even, why can't I just dump the MKV file right into my editor if it accepts it and start working? I understand that I need to use as high quality footage as possible, so is it just a matter of quality retention or is it something else? Just trying to make sense of which direcion I should go in, with as few steps along the way as necessary. Thanks.

I gave in to my husband. This is the first video I've made using Adobe Premiere instead of Avid Media Composer. Gawd, but I hate change. The waveform is SO much better in Avid and I'm not fond of strange keystrokes (Premier) rather than obvious buttons (Avid). The compelling reason to look at Premier is the way Avid hangs for so long when the IN and OUT points are set on the recorder and you're working with at least one track of Audio waveform. If we captured video every time we made a new Avid project, we wouldn't be dealing with the delay but, obviously, we prefer to capture every episode just once and work off that captured set. At least I now know that I CAN make a video to my standards using Premier. No idea yet where I go from here.

I used this music decades ago when I was working in Blakes 7. It's one of my very favorite Jane Oliver songs and it works great for Doctor Who!

Hi, I'm relatively new to vidding (made my first fanvid in April this year, and I've only used iMovie '11 so far), and I'm interested in stepping up my game by a teeny tiny amount. I'm hoping y'all can make me a recommendation for my next software to try which fits what I'm looking for, described below.

Thanks in advance for any recs you may have! :)

I was wondering if anyone could help me get a coloration similar to that in this clip @ 1:19 using Sony Vegas 9

The original color of the clip Here @ 0:37

And how do you do the effect where it like flashes into the next clip? I don't really know how to explain it so I took a screencap

If anyone could help me with either of those things, I would be grateful :)

(Hope this is ok to post here and that I tagged it correctly!)

Red Giant software is having a so-called Secret Sale, which runs until 11:59 PM PST today, Tuesday, December 14, 2010. (To find out when the sale ends in your time zone, visit the World Clock site.)

They've got tons of interesting plugins and presets, most of which I haven't used (and frankly wouldn't even know what to do with), but I've had a lot of fun with the 3S bundle, which includes Shine and Starglow, both of which I've used in AfterEffects for various purposes in recent vids. There are plenty of tutorials available, both from Red Giant and out in the wilds of YouTube, which I found very helpful.

For folks who like using effects, the sale might be worth a look. Most of the things on offer are compatible with After Effects; some can also be used with Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Motion, Avid, or Sony Vegas.

I've made a few fanvids over the years, but they've never really been all that great. They're usually very basic and kind of n00b looking and eventually I gave up. I want to get into it again, hopefully with enough knowledge to make fairly decent vids. Does anyone here have any tips or links to tutorials for editting techniques and all that stuff? I know the basics of the program, I'd just like to take it a step further and I'm having a little bit of difficulty. Any advice and tips will help. Thanks!

Summary: Sometimes, the boy doesn't get the girl dressed as a boy; sometimes, he gets the boy dressed as a girl.

Notes: The version shown at VividCon's Premieres vidshow is somewhat different from the online file. I was *exhausted* and rushing to meet the submission deadline to test audio format. This file has several changes from the one shown at VVC, for better or worse. Since I was tired but also had familiarity with the clips, my awareness of each clip's length was odd as I tried to estimate appropriate time to both read the subtitles and see the scenes. Thanks to the SARS team for the translation, which this vid includes their encoded hardsubs for certain scenes. I do welcome vid critique over the internet. I *definitely* would welcome a beta for any additional revisions. A special thank you to [livejournal.com profile] talitha78, who figuratively 'held my hand' during Premieres and also didn't say 'want some cheese' with that whine, afterwards. {g} Even with my disappointment over not resolving the audio, so far, I'm having a wonderful time at Vividcon! I've got awesome roommates and folk have been really nice.

After Effects video effect ) Also, part of why I ran out of time to meet VVC's deadline was from watching Toni Basil's Mickey video, and I got curious about the outline effect seen in the video's intro and end. Hana Kimi's choice of colors and lighting felt 'retro' to me, and I wanted to tap into that 80s vibe. Over the years, I rarely use Adobe After Effects for video editing, but I did experiment and found a similar outline effect... which I ended up not using this effect at all. I may or may not use the effect for another project, but for those that may want to tinker with the effect, I've got the instructions in my journal. I was using After Effects 7, but the CS versions should also be able to do the same thing. It's possible AE, under the new CS5, may be able to do this better, I don't know.

It's probably best to experiment around and adjust Levels/contrast in each clip to smooth out texture. Some clips manage to look acceptable without vid prep, while others look like the characters have some sort of flesh-eating virus. Less action in video is preferred. This effect can be combined with others such as mattes, etc.

I recently posted a tutorial about what gamma correction can do and how to use it in Sony Vegas. It's a nifty little effect that often goes unnoticed. If you are interested just what gamma correction can do, (have a look here).

Hello,

I know how to use the cookie cutters, not a problem there. What I want to do and I'm not finding a way to do it, is to determine the actual shape of the cutter myself. It has a rectangle choice, but I want the rectangle to be longer, narrower, than the one they provide. I'm not seeing a way to adjust that. Is there a way to make a cookie cutter shape that I can determine the parameters of myself?

Thanks in advance!

Hello all, I'm a newbie vidder and I've been poking around Memories. I've seen several posts telling me to find the beat and cut three frames ahead. Okay, find the beat, no problem. Here's the question that makes me feel like an idiot.

How do I cut "three frames" ahead? I guess what I mean is, How do I know I have three frames? I'm using WMM.

Thanks!

Hey all,
I am currently working on the biggest/fanciest/hardest vid I've ever done, with the intent to make a leap forward in my vidding skills. One thing I'm actively trying to move away from is editing everything on the beat of the music, as I've noticed it can be both distracting and dull. However, I've gotten so used to editing on the beat that now I am having a lot of trouble with this "free form" editing thing - I have no idea where to cut! I was hoping to gain some insight from other vidders as to how you approach cutting on or off the beat. Any advice, anecdotes or commiserating would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance. :)

Hey everyone,

I am looking for vidders who have worked with/in the green screening process and that would be willing to chat with me/give a basic tutorial/give me tips, etc. about such.

The types of thing that I really need to know are what do I need to green screen, both during footage filming and for the editing process? What software would you recommend? Tips for what works and what doesn't that I might not otherwise consider and anything else that you think I should know about the process from start to finish.

If you've work on or with green screening before and are willing to help me out as I seek to learn how to do this please let me know!

Thanks in advance!

I'm getting to that point on a vid where I start work on the titles/credits (ie, the point where I'm almost done with the first draft except for the really frustrating bits and want to comfort myself with ego-stroking *g*) and I'm wondering how other people approach titles. I've seen quite a few vids lately do awesome titles using what appears to be After Effects or a similar compositing program, and that's pretty out of the question for me, but I know there's got to be cool stuff I can do with Premiere Pro 2 and Photoshop CS3, which is what I'm working with.

All the titles I've done in the past have just been static text, over black or a short clip, sometimes with more text appearing on the beat, but not in any interesting ways. I sort of have vague ideas of keyframing the position of titles so that they can move into and out of the frame with irregular motions (rather than just rolling on and off) but I don't know where to start, and when I try to figure this stuff out from scratch I usually end up making it way, way harder than it needs to be.

So! How do you do interesting titles/credits without using an image compositing program or dozens upon dozens of tracks and nested sequences? (Like, I'm trying to avoid having a separate layer for each letter, because my computer would cry. 10-15 tracks max would be a good range, perhaps.) Are there titles you've done in past vids that you particularly like or think are good examples? I know I'm not being very specific here but that's because I'm so unclear on the software's capabilities in this regard that I'm not sure where to start having ideas.

(I hope this is the right tag to use--it's not *video* editing exactly but, uh, I do it in Premiere when making a vid, so I don't know what else to call it.)

test image ) This is a small sample image from a video frame (left pane is before filters and right pane is after filters). I've read AMV.org's forum, one of its tutorials, specked out Scintilla's Guide to Avisynth Filters, and read the settings/help text included with some filters, and wooboy, it's very possible I've completely missed various film filters because I use newer live-action source, thus, only use a few filters... but *damn*, I've got my face almost smooshed up against the monitor screen, and I'm not seeing what others are seeing. While the animated footage had some 'noise' going on, other vidders want their source very 'crispy'. Then again, my eyesight is *bad*. I'm linking to a couple fullscreen captures using beforeafterline and AvsP, suggestions on improving the video and/or script would be welcome and appreciated, otherwise, I'm rolling with what I've got:
clip details )

Also, for those that may want to legally try Sony Vegas Pro, B&H has Sony Vegas Pro 8 OEM (disc only and does not include the DVD burning software, DVD Architect) for $129.95, not including tax if applicable or shipping. Since B&H is an authorized Sony reseller in NY and there are some comments about v9 possibly releasing soon, you do get a free upgrade within 30days of purchase. This info may or may not be of interest to some since a new, unopened box version with both Vegas Pro 8 and DVD Architect can run between ~$400-$550 from retailers.

Alright, I have a question for any of you Vegas users out there. I saw this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3lvQmg6rwE a week or so ago, and ever since I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out how to re-create (in Vegas 6) the moving/collapsing masks that are used in this vid, but I can't quite get there.

At this point I've got the cookie cutter (square with white border) set, the clip opens using the "barn doors" transition with a white border (so it does appear that the two white bars of the border are actually opening up to reveal the video footage within) and then I've got it moving across the frame, but getting the clip to collapse in on itself and disappear is where I am running into some problems. I can use the barn doors transition going out, but in the sample vid the edge borders actually move toward each other, thereby collapsing the clip and removing it from view but with the transition I'm using, the borders disappear as the clip collapses, which doesn't look nearly as good.

So at this point I'm feeling like the transitions aren't as smooth as I would like and I just feel like maybe there is something I'm missing.

Has anyone ever attempted this affect in Vegas? I'm not sure what program the original vidder uses, and if it's not Vegas maybe this is just as close as I am going to get. If anyone out there has any suggestions on how to accomplish this effect I'd really appreciate any help you're willing to give.

I've had to upgrade from Premiere 6.0 to Premiere Pro CS3, which is kind of like going into your somewhat grubby but pleasantly familiar bathroom and suddenly finding a giant array of high-tech knobs and spouts and mystery tubing where your old shower used to be.

Question for vidders: how the hell do I turn off the Frame Blend option for all clips in my project file/on my timeline? There's a Frame Blend choice in the Clip section of the main menu, but when I select more than one clip, that option greys out.

I'm not even sure what Frame Blend does, but I strongly suspect it's blurring the clips unnecessarily. Right now the only option I can see is turning it off on every single clip by hand, which is not good for my RSI or my mental health. Help?

I've been downloading some episodes off kazaa. I have over twenty right now --- but about four of them, with some really excellent scenes that I would like to use in a vid have captions (?) in german at the bottom. It's very important that I use those scenes for a vid that I'm working on, but I can't imagine using it with that at the bottom and that's the only version that seems to be around for those episodes. Is there any way to remove those? I've heard of vidders editing out the opening credits from scenes, so I thought that there might be.

Thanks *very* much, in advance.
