What tools do you use to gather footage for vidding? How do you rip, convert, contort, and cajole source video into the format your editing program works with? This survey will crowd-source this information. The more people share, the more we can learn from each other. Tools you love, things you tried that weren't worth the time and effort, all your vidding experience is valuable.

We all have our preferences, we always will. There's still room to learn from others, find new things to try, new tools to try.

There's space for DVD ripping software, torrent sites, and more. The opinions entered can be anything from "this is perfect and I use it exclusively" to "tried it, didn't work, never again" and even in between. The aggregate data will include as much or as little personal comments as each person wants.

I am new to vidding and have been using DVD Shrink to reauthor scenes from my movies, but I have come up against some newer disks that DVD Shrink can't analyze/rip. So I got a trial version of DVDFab 8 on a suggestion from someone in the community.

I was able to rip the movie I'm working on, but I'm having trouble reauthoring specific scenes using the trial version, and I can't find the correct tutorial that deals with this. I would appreciate any tips from people more familiar with this program. Also, I see the program slaps a logo on the ripped files every couple of minutes... any way to get rid of that? (I suspect I just have to buy the real program to keep it from doing that.)

If not, any better reauthoring programs you can suggest? ^___^ Thank you so much!

Yes, I realize I'm about 10 years behind the curve, but I've just this year gotten a computer fast/big enough (gamer systems FTW) to vid on. I want to put my older vids (1995-2004) online, but I don't know a good way to get those with copyguard protection from the VCR to the computer. I have a IEEE 1394 port on the computer, but how would I connect it to the VCR? I have an NVIDIA video card and Sony Vegas 11 that I think will do the capture, but I'm at a loss on how to connect VCR->Computer.

Has anyone done this before?

So I make clips with virtualdub and reassemble them with Debugmode Wax, which I know no one else on earth uses but it's free and it's not WMM. The problem is that neither of these support .mkv and I want to use about 15 gb of .mkv source. I can use Hamster Free Video Converter to convert whole videos from .mkv to .avi at once, and it works fine, but it takes hours. I would rather just clip the bits I want in .mkv and then convert to .avi.

Does anyone have a good, preferably free application that can clip .mkv files with some degree of precision? Thanks for any advice.

the user ratings are pretty damn good for a software from giveaway site, plus, there are literally hundreds of free tools to dl from youtube, but I have a site, that I think, is somewhat streaming in SWF, and I yet have to be able to get that stream!
I hope, this one will work, but I will have to wait till tonight, before I can test it, so I am already sharing the info here:

I am ever struggling with better organization for my favorite vids. Today I decided to make a bunch of imeem playlists with as many favorite vids of mine as I could find on them. They are really handy because now I can watch favorite vids no matter what computer I'm at! I will always keep hard copies of my absolute favorite vids, but I'm really digging this system right now. Especially since imeem's interface and quality is so great. Check it out: http://www.imeem.com/beerbad/videoplaylists/

Also, I got approved to do a website and new vid as my senior media studies project this semester. For this new vid I am going to try to step up my game and make something more complicated, faster and shinier than the vids I've done previously. I will be using DVD footage exclusively. Now, my question is this: Should I use my own hardware and software (Dell laptop with Ulead Video Studio 11) or use my school's media studies facilities (professional setup with DVD capturing, Mac desktops, and Final Cut Pro)? I am obviously more comfortable with using my own computer, but if the high-tech Mac setup is going to make making this vid easier and better, I'm willing to switch over.

I would really appreciate any suggestions/thoughts the vidders in this community might have regarding this. I'm hoping to make a choice relatively soon so I can go to it!

So, I've got the songs picked out, the source vids acquired and the storyboarding done.

Now I need software that handles captures and video editing. I use a PC, and Matrox Rainbow Runner was insanely clunky and gave me an 800 M monstrosity of a vid. Could someone rec me a better piece of software? Esp one that exports to VCR as Matrox did not.

Or is using an editing VCR easier?

Was looking for any feedback on the following analog to digital capture devices:

Formac Studio
Director's Cut Take 2
Canopus's ADVC-100

I've found a few online reviews, but am looking for a vidder's POV.
