I'm looking for up-to-date how-to guides for vidding on a Mac. Everything I'm finding is very old, at least for fan vid-specific instructions. I'm planning to learn Adobe Premiere. I've been using Final Cut Express, but it isn't compatible with the newest Mac OS. I'm not tech savvy, so the more detailed and specific, the better.

Is the current version of iMovie any good for making fan vids? I've never tried to use it.

My clips in iMovie sometimes stutter a bit when I play them back. The needle (for lack of a better word) will come to a standstill for a second or even two before resuming play. This will make my clips lag behind the music.

However, when I export my works in progress, everything — clips and music — seems to line up OK.

Does anyone else have this stuttering problem with iMovie? If so, what do you do about it?

So, this has been my weekend. On Friday, I finished the vid I've been working on for the past couple of months. I exported it out of iMovie in DV format and then transferred it to MPEG Streamclip and exported it from there in MP4 and MOV formats. Problem was, the smallest file size I could get while still keeping the quality high was 97 MB. (Erk!) The vid is a little over four minutes long, and the frame size is 854 x 480, which may be part of the problem--I couldn't figure out how to downsize it in MPEG Streamclip without destroying the aspect ratio.

I know I've downloaded plenty of fanvids in the past that were great quality, comparable length to mine, and yet had file sizes of only 20-40 MB. So on Saturday, I spent practically the entire afternoon scouring tutorials, LJ vid communities, and pretty much any other place I could find that might help me figure out how to compress my vid.

During my search, I saw ffmpegX favorably mentioned a number of times, so I downloaded it and gave it a try (actually, many tries). Using that program, I was able to compress the vid to about 37 MB, but the vid ended up so dark I could barely see what was going on. None of the tutorials or posts I saw about ffmpegX mentioned this problem, so I'm at a loss as to how to fix it.

I should mention that I actually couldn't get ffmpegX properly installed--I located all the different components, but when I tried to install, I got this error message: ##sh: -c: line 1: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `'' sh: -c: line 2: syntax error: unexpected end of file. I was still able to use the program (to my surprise), but I'm wondering if the darkness issue might have something to do with those missing components that apparently didn't get installed.

So, all that to say, my question is: can anybody help me figure out how to use ffmpegX to get my vid compressed while still keeping it nice and bright, or alternatively, can anyone tell me how to export it out of iMovie or MPEG Streamclip without ending up with a huge file size? Any help would be appreciated, because I'm still obviously very new at this and it's driving me nuts.

Sorry for the tl;dr. :(

I have searched the comm's memories and came up empty.

First vid. Using IMovie 6.0.3. CANNOT figure out how to edit sound- read tutorials, followed directions. Even did what they said- moved the little purple buttons up and down, watched the little % button move along with it. But when I saved the vid? NOTHING CHANGED.

All I want to do is make the song STOP when the vid stops (IE, song is longer than I need it to be for the story I want to tell). Sweet Mary Mother of God, someone tell me what to do.

Thank you in advance.

I can't import a clip into IMovieHD. My previous vids (not many - I'm a newbie) were done on IMovie6, which always imported clips, eventually. Normally I import .mov files with DV/DVCPRO compression from MPEG Streamclip. This clip, I've changed into different compressions, into .avi and .dv, and it won't import any of them. IMovie6 WILL import it, but I want to use IMovieHD since I discovered it has more features, most importantly audiowave. I've imported other clips from the same VOB file (ripped DVD) with no problem. The clip is short. This is driving me crazy and I have no idea what to do!

Hey all! I am a fairly new vidder (started last December) and have a few vids under my belt. I work off of a mac and use iMovie. I have purchased a few Slick plug ins that gave me some more transitions and titles and such, but I am curious if anyone has experience with iMovie who could tell me how one might zoom in on a scene or crop a scene.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance. :)

Hi, this might be the wrong place for this question, but I was wondering how to make fanvids with clips from TV episodes that are not out on DVD yet. Can you use clips from episodes bought on iTunes? I don't think so, 'cause those are in a protected format, right?

I'm pretty new at this, I'm on a Mac OS X, and I use iMovie. Thanks for any help.

I just switched from a PC to a Mac, and I'm attempting to make my first video in iMovie, having previously used Windows Movie Maker. I have two questions that I hope you nice people can help me with.

1) When I was importing my video (episodes of a TV show in .mp4 format, 350 MB apiece if it matters) and I asked it to import five episodes, the first four imported properly and quickly. The fifth is taking a really long time. It says it's got 180+ minutes left to finish importing, and it's already been going for almost half an hour. I tried canceling it and restarting it, but that didn't help. I'm willing to be patient and wait if this is simply something that is normal for the program, but since it didn't do this with the first four episodes, I'm guessing this isn't normal. Any suggestions on what to do?

2) I've looked in the memories, but mostly what I've found under the iMovie section are just questions like this one or about other aspects of the program. Are there any good, basic tutorials for iMovie as a whole? Any suggestions you might have would be lovely.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

ETA: Got it. Thanks to everyone for their help. :)

I taught myself to vid with iMovie (hey, it came free with my computer), but iMovie, as far as I've been able to figure (by mucking around at random), is rather limiting and frustrating. I need a new program, and possibly some tutorials that explain not only what various features do, but also what those words they've just used to describe them mean (I learned by mucking, not word-using). I've currently downloaded HyperEngine-AV on my computer, and it looks like one could do more with it, but my "mucking around" has only caused the program to crash in many delightful ways, and it has a tendency to play frames it claims (when I look on a frame-by-frame basis) are not there. So I'm lost, completely and utterly lost. If someone could recommend some programs (free or dirt cheap -- I'm just a poor college student) or tutorials, I'd be eternally grateful (but in a non-stalkerish fashion). Help, pretty please?

For [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn, and any Mac vidders who are vidding with ripped DVD letterbox (16:9) source and iMovie:

If you are having trouble with aspect ratio on your clips, you can export the clips with black bars at the correct aspect ratio for iMovie by using the program [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn recommended a while back, MPEG Streamclip. What you need to do is choose the following settings:

Export to Quicktime-->
Compression: APPLE DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Frame Size: Custom-->720 x 360
Cropping: click checkbox on-->set values as: Top = -60, Left = 0, Bottom = -60, Right = 0
Make Movie

DVDxDV does not have an equivalent setting. Hope it helps someone. :-)

Hey everyone,

I just joined, and I'm wondering if someone could help me out. You see, I just bought a Mac, which comes with I-movie. Is it possible to rip dvd clips using that program, or will I need to download something else. (I've heard of Smart Ripper, but if anyone has any other suggestions [that come Adware-free], I'd be grateful indeed!)

Also, has anyone heard of a Nummy Treat-esque place dedicated to QaF videos? [I'm a crazed Queer as Folk fan, and there never seems to be enough music videos for that show...}

Thank You!

thing!

I'm not sure if anyone else will find this relevant, but it's been bugging the heck out of me, so I figured I'd post the solution I discovered.

I use iMovie on OS9.

The thing that's been bugging me is: when I reverse the direction of a clip and then do a cross-dissolve with another clip, the reversed clip gets a jig in it--can't think of a better way to describe it. Where the motion is going backwards-blip forwards-backwards.

Well, that reversed clip needs to be rendered and not just clip x reversed. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do that in iMovie. What I did was do an effect to the reversed clip (my effect of choice is a slight increase in contrast) and then commit to the effect. Then the effect is not shown as reversed anymore because it's its own clip. And it doesn't jig when cross-dissolved. Yay.

I am clever.
