So the last time I did a vid was back in 2004. I used to use DVD decrypter but I read in another post that due to its age, it can't really keep up with some of the new DVDs. I don't mind having to pay for a program as long as the price isn't insane, but is there anything out there compatible with Windows 7 that is easy to use? I haven't done this in years so I pretty much have the training wheels back on. :(

Hello, I have a few questions about the best way to decrypt and rip DVDs. I've been ripping DVDs for years, but only to back up discs, not to use the footage in vidding. I used to use DVD Decrypter to rip the discs to VOBs, encode them as mp4 and then move the big VOB files to my external drive in case I needed them again. But DVD Decrypter is pretty old now and can't crack the copy protection on a lot of the newer discs, so I started looking for a replacement, but it doesn't look like there is a free option out there that is as good. Then I discovered that with a little tweaking, I could rip the discs straight through Handbrake as mp4s and skip the step of having to decrypt and then re-encode. Yay! But I want to create the best footage possible for vids, and according to what I've read, I should be making VOB files and then saving them as DV in MPEG Streamclip. So what I'm wondering is, if I'm converting them to DV anyway, couldn't I just use the mp4 files I made with Handbrake, or would there be a huge quality loss in doing that? I will make VOB files if absolutely necessary, but I'd prefer not to. Also, if anyone can recommend a good decrypter that's more updated than DVD Decrypter, that would be great. I'm a fairly tech-savvy person, but new to vidding techniques, and the amount of stuff you need to know seems a bit overwhelming. Thanks!

Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to compress VOB files? I'm making a video from clips I've made using DVD Shrink and DVDFab, but the files are just too large to work with in any functional capacity. I've heard HandBrake is a good way to go, as well as SUPER and AutoGordianKnot... Do you have a favorite?

I'm working on a PC and using Pinnacle to make the actual vid (it handles the VOB files well but does not compress them, though the vid it turns out is AVI. I am concerned because I did a test run vid made up of exactly two clips and a ten second mp3, and the file ended up at 48.3 MB).

Thank you so much!

Hello, I'm new here and I've been having a bit of trouble converting my files.

My video files are. mkv which as you know isn't supported by Vegas. So I used E.M. Total Video - HD Version to convert them to .MP4/MPEG-4. I try to import into Vegas but it says there's an error that can't be determined.

I posted the MediaInfo under the cut. If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it.

Edited to Add: I have K-Lite Codecs if that helps.

UPDATE!
This was easily fixed by not using MP3 as my audio source. In fact I just rendered my original AVI with the audio included, inputted my .avs into zarx gui (minus the kill audio line) and it was able to encode in such a way that was compatible with Quicktime. Easy fix for a headache of a problem.

It was recently brought to my attention, by a mac user, that my latest video would not play in quicktime. I went to the animemusivideos.org forums for help.

A few things:
- This is my first time using ut video codecs when rendering, and my first time using zarx264gui to compress.
- I vid in Sony Vegas 10.0
- My source material was comprised up of both mpg and avi files.
- I originally used the ut yuv422 uly2 codec to render the AVI [Did not choose this for any particular reason.]
- I could not get my site to embed the original vid (jwplayer) without distortion.
- Both Vimeo and Tumblr are able to convert the vid and have it play without distortion, youtube however, could not convert the vid without distortion.
- Based on suggestions from the forum, I later tried rendering in ut video yuv420 and huffyuv and compressing again with zarx (setting level to: unrestricted, 4.1 and 3.0) and none of these played.
- I am able to compress the video as an .avi in virtaldubmod and have it play in QT.
- Here is the file itself, in case that helps: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F7RWS0LX

While Vdub works, I find the end result with zarx to be clearer and pretty gorgeous. I'd really like to figure out how to get this to work so that it's compatible with quicktime. I realize most people use other methods for viewing their vids, and this seems to work in all of them except quicktime.

There is more detail here where the thread is continuing: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=104872

I'm also going to crosspost this to see if the folks over at [livejournal.com profile] vidding_tech may know anything.

Hey vidders,

I'm very new to this process, so of course the information out there is pretty overwhelming. I'm hoping you can help me decide my best choice as far as which program to use, how to go about ripping DVD files, codecs, etc.

I have both Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD. As far as making/editing clips, I really like Premiere (although it's possible that Vegas' trimmer is just as easy to use and I just can't figure it out...). I'm confused about ripping DVDs. Apparently Premiere doesn't like XviD/DivX, so I've been trying to avoid that.

What I've done is ripped a disc of episodes (S1 of Supernatural, not that it matters much) using CloneDVD5, which of course gave me .vob files. I looked around the internet a bit, and learned that Premiere will accept .vob files if you change the extension to .mpg, and it worked. I was able to import a .vob file and played around with editing it as well. The only problem I ran into is that the episodes were split into more than one .vob file - is that something my DVD ripper did, and if so, how can I fix it?

The big problem is that it seems too easy. Will I have trouble exporting/getting my finished vid onto the internet if the clips used were edited as .vob/.mpg files?

Basically I'm wondering if I should stick with Premiere, and if so, keep editing as .mpg or try to convert my .vob files into something else. Or, should I just convert them into DivX files and learn how to use Vegas? I realize that what program you use is just a preference issue, but I don't want further complications down the line.

Thanks!

More and more High Def TV footage is becoming available and that footage is often made available inside 'Matroska' or '.mkv' - an open source video container  Here are a few tips on working with that footage (for both Mac and PC)

HD Fan Vid Tutorial

The vidding forum 'Foolish Passion' has assembled a number of tutorials, among them working with High Def footage. You do need to create a free membership to view the boards. Look under "Vidding 101 - Tutorials for Mac and PC'.

I'm rather clueless about the technical side of things, so I thought some of you might be able help me out. I use SUPER to convert my source .avi files into audio-less .mpg's so that I can clip them in VirtualDub (and then save the clips as .avi's and open them in WMM to vid), and while this used to work fine, lately* the resulting .mpg files have these green or black squares running along the right side in many shots that carry through into each subsequent step (if you've watched any of my more recent vids you probably know what I mean, since I wasn't able to avoid them entirely). Can anyone suggest what I might try doing differently?

*By "lately", I mean "a year ago, when I last used to vid". But let's pretend for the moment that I still have free time.

ETA: Turns out this was a codec issue, and now sorted thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ancastar and [livejournal.com profile] chaila43. Any future vids will be much more quickly done and prettier!

Hey all :) I have a question, and feel free to throw things at me if this isn't allowed, but I figured I'd ask. I am trying to rip about six minutes from the middle of a video file, but for some reason it comes out with the the video all messed up. I tried going back and ripping the first five minutes and that worked perfectly. I'm so technically illiterate lol, does anyone here maybe know why it's not letting me rip the middle part? Do I need to set a specific video parameters? (I'm using Xilisoft video converter, if that helps any.) Thanks for any help, you guys are awesome :)

Just reading this thread and wondering if any new utilities or techniques have shown up. I'd like to make clips for use in Premiere Pro CS4 with as little degradation AND as little hassle as possible.

Thanks!

I normally download things in .avi, but right now, I need to convert things from .mpg into .avi. What freeware is recommended, and if the settings need to be changed or set, what do they need to be at for the program you recommend?

I am using Windows vista (32 bit)

My husband has just become a Mac owner, and therefore needs to find new ways of handling his vidding files.

On his PC, he just ripped raw vob files with SmartRipper and used them directly in Vegas. He also ran AnyDVD to region crack the DVD drive, as we have both region 4 and region 1 DVDs.

Question 1 - is there a region crack for Macs?

Question 2 - for anyone here that uses Final Cut or Final Cut Express... what do you use to rip and encode your source?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I recently was shown a great little program which allows you to create really nice quality streaming versions of videos:- SWiSH Video2

A bit more info on this easy to use yet reasonably powerful application at the above link/my journal...its also totally free for a limited time/usage period.

I'm trying to encode a vid using TMPGEnc, and when I play back the resulting file it slows or gets stuck on some frame(s) of video, throwing the audio and the video out of sync. I've encoded vids to Xvid with TMPGEnc before without any problems. For this one, in addition to Xvid I've also tried DivX and a couple of different Microsoft MPEG codecs, all with the same result.

There was a similar issue in a post in the memories from last year, involving VirtualDub and Divx, but apparently nobody had an explanation or solution at the time. I was hoping either that person had figured it out or someone else had stumbled upon a solution since then.

ETA: Fixed! Though I have no idea what did it. I went back to Xvid from the other codecs, switched from 2-pass to 1-pass mode, changed the audio format to MPEG Layer-3, and closed some other programs that had been open in the background. Could have been any or all of those things. Explanations welcome.

If there aren't any, maybe this can at least be a useful list of things to try for anyone else having the same problem.

Maybe it's just me. I've tried EO Video, Divx Converter, WinMPG, and something else I've forgotten, and I cannot successfully convert .wmv or mp4 files to a divx supported avi file.

EO Video is prohibiting me from doing any conversion until I've paid for the trial product. I paid for WinMPG and and Divx Converter, and neither worked, so I'm reluctant to pay for a third converter that doesn't work [note: Divx Converter might handle wmv; it definitely can't handle mp4.]

I'm running Windows XP. My goal it to take an assortment of video files and convert them so they are divx avi files. Most of the files have the extension avi, but some do not appear to be divx-encoded avi.

All of the files can be opened and viewed with the VLC player, so I know they are valid files of some type, so presumably they can be converted.

Any suggestions for a conversion program that works, and is cheap?

Note: The files I converted through WinMPG could not be read by either the VLC Player or the Divx Player. Divx Converter keeps crashing -- it seems it's the wmv files that cause it; it doesn't recognize mp4 as a valid type.

EDIT: I took [livejournal.com profile] nbgeekgirl's advice and downloaded Super. Couldn't download it with Firefox, but I was able to with MSIE. Result: Super is awesome. It converted the mp4 and wmv files superfast, and I also used it to add divx encoding to the avi files my Divx player couldn't handle. The GUI is a joy to use, with everything clearly labeled instead of a bunch of coy meaningless buttons. It works so much better than Divx Converter [which I just bought] that I'm kind of stunned.

Like [livejournal.com profile] nbgeekgirl, my converted files showed up somewhere peculiar, in my case the root directory. Just search for the buggers and you'll find them.

Hey, I really need y'all's help :( I am trying to convert a DVD file to a .avi file. I have SmartRipper, and I seem to have come up with one or several .vob files. I guess I'm supposed to use DVD2AVI to convert the .vob to .avi but I don't know HOW. I have been screwing around with this for two days now, and my brain is about to explode! (See my icon? Yeah, that's about to be me.)

So please, please, have pity on my poor head! Any and all help with how to proceed shall receive my firstborn child, in addition to my undying devotion.

Thanks!

Hi, this might be the wrong place for this question, but I was wondering how to make fanvids with clips from TV episodes that are not out on DVD yet. Can you use clips from episodes bought on iTunes? I don't think so, 'cause those are in a protected format, right?

I'm pretty new at this, I'm on a Mac OS X, and I use iMovie. Thanks for any help.
