Hi everyone,

I've encountered a problem and I hope you can help me. I've been working on a vid using .vob files and yesterday everything worked fine. However, when I opened the project today I took a very long time to load, so I closed it and opened it again. Now one of the .vob files doesn't work anymore. I doesn't appear with a preview in the project media window but just as the vlc player symbol. I can use it normally on the timeline, but now there are black frames within the clips which haven't been there before. These black frames remain after rendering. I tried opening an older version of the project, but they all show the same mistake. I restarted the computer and that didn't help either. I'm at a loss now. I don't know what happened and I don't know if I can even salvage this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EAT: I want to thank everyone who commented!

[livejournal.com profile] rbfvid : I tried your first suggestion which seemed to work, but then the problem was back, so I took [livejournal.com profile] amnisias 's advise and re-ripped the source. It looks good now, I hope it stays that way. In any way, I think the other suggestions are very good to keep in mind. Thanks again!

Does anyone know why MPEG Streamclip might have suddenly stopped opening avis on my Windows laptop? I recently did a lot of clipping with it and it worked great, went back a couple of weeks later and suddenly those same files come out as audio only. I've tried a bunch of different codec packs and nothing seems to help.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions of alternative clipping software that's good with avis?

I'm trying to make a vid in Sony Vegas 8 Pro, but when I browse to the file in the Explorer, it states beneath the list of files that the video and audio stream attributes could no be determined. The files play fine on my laptop, they .avi/xvid files.

I've tried importing as well with no luck. Is it a codec problem?

If it helps, my OS is Windows XP.

I'm also unsure what to tag this?

Hey! Newbie here, so I apologize in advance for the fail.

I just started using Windows Movie Maker, and right away I found a problem: when I import an .avi file into WMM, I can hear the audio - but all that I see is a black screen. I checked the memories under the Windows Movie Maker section, but I was unable to find anything. I downloaded a DivX codec pack in hopes that it would work, but no luck.

I'm using Windows Vista, heh. The video I'm trying to make is a Lord of the Rings fanvideo for a land community, so I don't want to spend any money on additional programs. All I need to know is how to get the video part of .avi files to play. =)

Thank you in advance!

ETA: Solved, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bananainpyjamas' suggestion of installing VirtualDub. =D Many thanks, also, to everyone else for all their ideas! ♥

Hello! I'm trying to adopt a new (read: proper) vidding method and have a question about frame rates. I posted to vidding_tech (along with a separate question about editing directly with avisynth files) but didn't get any bites -- any advice you may have would be fantastic.

The question is: At the moment I'm working with Stargate: Atlantis DVDs, which come up as 29.97 FPS and FILM. When I make the D2Vs, I choose FORCE FILM, which makes them 23.976 FPS and avoids any pesky interlacing. However, I'm told that Premiere Pro doesn't like 23.976 and that I should add a line to my AviSynth scripts saying AssumeFPS(23.98) and edit that way.

BUT! What do I do once I've exported the complete, edited vid? I was reading the Encode to MPEG for con distribution instructions because that's what VividCon requires, and there is no option for 23.98 FPS. Is there a simple line to add to the new AviSynth script for the AVI? Or does it require other steps? Meanwhile, does it matter for online distribution? And does any of this affect the separate audio file I'll have exported?

My genius self deleted the final draft of a vid along with the source files about a week ago and didn't notice until now. I've tried a few file recovery programs, but they aren't finding it. Does anyone know of a good program or a different way to recover a deleted file?

I've used:
Handy Recovery
PC Inspector
Undelete Plus
Ontrack Easy Recovery
Smart Undelete
Uneraser (this one I couldn't get to work)
Recuva is running overnight

The problem is basically stated in the title. Whenever I open this one Vegas project, my pc reboots. Other projects work fine. This started happening out of blue. Please help :(

I've just finished a project with Vegas Movie Studio, and it seems to be working fine- it plays in the preview screen. Problem is, when I render it, it won't render. A second of the vid will appear, but that's it. Has anyone else run into this problem? I took a screencap of the timeline, in case I've got something in the wrong place. (The program originally told me to put the video/images on the Text timeline, but I moved them down after the first render failed.)

I'm a new, wide-eyed vidder and I have some questions that sound a bit silly, but I hope you can help me! (I bow down to this community, the memories been tremendously helpful thus far!)

I've been tinkering with Premiere Pro; I also have After Effects but I haven't gotten into it yet. I have Vegas Movie Studio as well, but having just figured out what to do with Premiere, it's just confusing me. So my questions are regarding Premiere, but I have Vegas at my disposal as well.

1. Making clips. I started making clips in Premiere itself: dragging my .avi file to the source window, scrolling through until I find my clips, using in and out points, and then making subclips. Is that.. right? The memories section is full of tips about DVD ripping and all these different programs and converting file types and I'm just confused. Of course, I've encountered a problem with Premiere: when I drag the file to the source window and hit play, video only plays for about 2 seconds, then freezes, while audio continues. If anyone knows what might be going wrong, I'd love some help!

2. Adding text. I see all these vids on YT made with Movie Maker and is seems like anyone can just add a black screen with text to their videos, but I'm at a loss. Do I create it in PS first? (Or perhaps After Effects?) Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I cannot get my Saw III DVD to rip in either DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink. It plays fine and I didn't have any trouble ripping Saw or Saw II. Anyone else have this problem?

So, I was in my editing software, about to finish a video, and as I was saving it, for the trillionth time, my laptop overheated and shut off. When I opened the file back up after restarting the computer, it had significantly changes (half of it was missing, for one). Had anyone had this problem that knows how to undo changes done to a file?

I use Puremotion EditStudio. Which I think no longer technically exists as a company, so... yeah.

I've posted this over at MacVidding 191, but thought I'd post it here, too. I've had an odd problem with unwanted resizing. I've had a really odd problem, the clip in the viewer window below, with the title safe boundaries showing, should have given me the entire cowboy.

Instead I'm getting a tiny piece of the sky.

This is without any effort on my part to scale or crop. What's up? How do I fix it? The original resolution of the footage is small, 320x240, and I've never worked with files with that resolution, but if it shows in the title safe area, shouldn't that also show in the canvas?

I NEED YOUR HELP!!

A few weeks ago my laptop crashed...so I sent it into the computer help desk thinking it would be fixed and I'd be on my way. In the end it turned out all my files got deleted- but I had them on back-up. So I copied and pasted them onto my computer and then BAM!! Computer crashed again and unknowingly I "cut" the files off my drive...meaning I'd lost them when my computer crashed.

Now obviously I am devastated about my photos but I am horrified because I lost ALL my videos. I have 15 uploaded on MegaFire, the rest are GONE....aside from a few crappy YouTube quality videos.

If you have any of my videos download, AT ALL, can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE upload them to megafire or megaupload or somewhere for me. I would be extremely grateful and would be forever in your debt. I am beyond devastated atm and just...I'm writing this through tears...so if you have any, seriously...I would be sooooo grateful!

Thanks...Lauraxx (shoopdancer)

I'll try to make this brief.  There's this vid I've been meaning to do for a long, long time.  The song is a sort of passive-aggressive one in which the singer complains about being unable to live up to his girl's expectations, with hints that he's afraid of being displaced by someone else.

The movie has three characters who could be plugged into this.  A is the girl.  B is a secondary character, A's ex-lover who is still devoted to her and goes to ridiculous lengths to make sure she's happy even though she's with C now.  C is the main character, who isn't attracted to A at all, but is in a relationship with her for a complex of other reasons (chiefly pity and passivity).

Whose POV? )

Anybody else dealt with a dilemma like this?  Any thoughts on which concern should take precedence?

I'm trying to put up my vids for download (not streaming), so used Xvid and then zipped the files.

About half the people who tried it for me got full sound and pic...the other half got only audio.

Anyone else willing to test it for me and/or have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
(is is some sort of coding problem? is there a better codec to be using? is it just a difference of what I people have loaded on their computers?...)

Hey y'all! I'm having trouble trying to use Lagarith to encode .vob files. Every time I try to use it, the resulting footage is slowed down considerably - 2x or more. Huffyuv works fine, and I've been using that, but the files I get out of it are so big that I'd really rather that Lagarith worked. Is there some setting I can fiddle with (in VirtualDubMod) to make Lagarith cooperate with my footage?

Thanks!

Hi all,

So, new vidder and new poster here - I've got exactly one vid under my belt so far, so I've got a long way to go ;) - and I'm looking for advice about how to pick between sources, when you've got two choices of poor technical quality.

I've got two copies of the same source material, and neither is 100% usable by itself.

Copy A - has nice bright colours, but is cropped (a la cam copies of cinema releases) so as to lop off the top and left side of the frame. For most shots, this isn't terribly important, but there are a few shots I wanted to use in the vid I'm working on, and they lose a lot of their impact (eg half a facial expression is missing, that kind of thing). Not the greatest image quality, but pretty watchable on most frames. 704px x 336px aspect ratio (wtf).

Copy B - noticeably desaturated and rather dark; not unwatchably so, but definitely worse than Copy A, and worse than the original source (which is mostly bright and colorful). Apart from the desaturation, image quality is higher. Uncropped, and a sensible aspect ratio - 640px x 272px, which is 2.35:1.

Bear in mind that this is for a property where high-quality source is not yet available, so people won't be expecting DVD- or even TV-quality from a vid (I hope) - and in fact there's already been at least one widely-popular vid in the fandom using source of similar quality (although less stupid cropping) to my Copy A.

So, I'm trying to decide: do I do the entire vid from Copy A, and just put up with or work around the scenes that are significantly impaired by being cropped? Do I do it all from Copy B and accept the loss of bright color, which may spoil it for some viewers? Or do I use a mix of the sources, and try and straighten out aspect ratio & color saturation mismatches as I go? (I'm using iMovie 09; I'm not entirely sure what it's capable of yet.)

Any advice you can give would be most welcome!

Help!

I have a problem.

I have about 20 seconds left of the video I was working on, so I open the project... and it's gone. The time line is all empty and screwed up. I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8.0. I took a screen cap of the project. The project itself is gone, the audio/video tracks on the left are gone, everything is gone (except the project media for some reason).

It can't just be gone, right?! There has to be some button to press to get it back. How can it just be gone?

I've googled the problem and can't seem to find anything. I've never seen this before. I mean, how does this even happen?! PLEASE, anyone, if you can help me figure this out, I will give you my first born. Any suggestions/advice? Has anyone had this problem before?

I'm having issues with my Sony Vegas 7.

Basically when I start the program I get this message:

warning: An error has occured while loading the project file [projectfile.veg]
An error occurred while loading a plug-in or plug-ins. The plug-in(s) specified are not installed on this system.

If I hit the "details" button I get: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 - Transition

Does anyone know what this means? Since this error started occurring, the program doesn't seem to recognise the video part of avi files. It reads them as audio only. These are files that worked perfectly earlier. mpeg files still play normally.

I have tried: (1) reinstalling the program (2) updating and reinstalling DivX

That's pretty much the extent of my computer knowledge. Obviously something changed in my system, but I have no idea what and I'm just... stuck. Can anyone please help?

I've just tried cutting some bits out of an episode with virtualdub, but it keeps kicking up an error message. I started using the mpeg compression, which I'm sure is what I used on my old laptop, but I tried it with the divx compression just to be sure, and it's the same thing. This is the message I get:

An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'VirtualDub'...
...reading address 00000000...
...while running thread "Processing" (thread.cpp:152).

Anyone have any clue what's wrong?
