I'm looking for up-to-date how-to guides for vidding on a Mac. Everything I'm finding is very old, at least for fan vid-specific instructions. I'm planning to learn Adobe Premiere. I've been using Final Cut Express, but it isn't compatible with the newest Mac OS. I'm not tech savvy, so the more detailed and specific, the better.

Is the current version of iMovie any good for making fan vids? I've never tried to use it.

I recently tried making my own project settings in Premiere using a guide someone made -- but it came out very wrong and I've been wary of it since. But I think the time has come to try again -- I'm dealing with source that's 23 fps and the lowest pre-set Premiere offers is 25 fps. I was silly and tried to go ahead anyway, but exported video isn't clean and pretty as I'd like it. I'm going to try to make a project specs specific to my source and I'd love it if any of you have advice or guides on how that's done. The source for this project is 576x320 and 23 frames/second.

Hi all!

I was considering downloading the trial version of Adobe Premiere. Most of my video files are in .wmv format but I've recently DL'd a new fandom that are in .avi format so I figured I'd try Premiere out using these so I won't have to convert a bunch of .wmv to .avi. Anway, I'm totally clueless about codecs - do I need to download any to import & use the .avi files in Premiere? (I may try Sony Vegas after this, so the question applies to that program as well).

Any hep with the codec question or any help for Adobe Premiere in general would be much appreciated!

Thanks :-)

[Links are always helpful - preferably virus free of course]

Hey vidders,

I'm very new to this process, so of course the information out there is pretty overwhelming. I'm hoping you can help me decide my best choice as far as which program to use, how to go about ripping DVD files, codecs, etc.

I have both Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD. As far as making/editing clips, I really like Premiere (although it's possible that Vegas' trimmer is just as easy to use and I just can't figure it out...). I'm confused about ripping DVDs. Apparently Premiere doesn't like XviD/DivX, so I've been trying to avoid that.

What I've done is ripped a disc of episodes (S1 of Supernatural, not that it matters much) using CloneDVD5, which of course gave me .vob files. I looked around the internet a bit, and learned that Premiere will accept .vob files if you change the extension to .mpg, and it worked. I was able to import a .vob file and played around with editing it as well. The only problem I ran into is that the episodes were split into more than one .vob file - is that something my DVD ripper did, and if so, how can I fix it?

The big problem is that it seems too easy. Will I have trouble exporting/getting my finished vid onto the internet if the clips used were edited as .vob/.mpg files?

Basically I'm wondering if I should stick with Premiere, and if so, keep editing as .mpg or try to convert my .vob files into something else. Or, should I just convert them into DivX files and learn how to use Vegas? I realize that what program you use is just a preference issue, but I don't want further complications down the line.

Thanks!

I am using many avs files with Premiere 6.5 (never a good idea...) on a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Windows XP, a 100 GB harddrive (12 GB free) and 2 GB RAM. Intel Core 2 CPU T7200 2.00 GHz.

When exporting, I get the “memory could not be ‘read’” error. It always crashes somewhere between frames 1428 and 1515. (I also got this error constantly when working on the timeline but always managed to work around it by restarting from archived project files).

I have SetMemoryMax(16) at the top of all my scripts. I've tried restarting and exporting with no other programs or windows open, turning virtual memory up to 4 GB, turning on the “optimize stills” option, deleting archived projects and preview files I didn't need, turning off the view thumbnails and wavelengths in the timeline options, and deleting unneeded mattes and clips.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello.  I'm pretty new to vidding and still learning.  I have a question about HuffYUV. I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. I have read all kinds of documentation that it's finicky and does not like Divx/Xvid encoding and that it's best to use HuffYUV or Lagarith.  As I understand it, HuffYUV files are larger due to the lossless compression but is it normal for them to be around 12G for 25 minutes of footage?  I read that I should expect 4-5G for the same time which is more than fine, 12-15 is a little much. I'm using DVD Decrypter, Avisynth & VirtualDubMod for this process.

I'm ripping directly from the DVDs and the quality of the .avi is beautiful.  I can't honestly tell the difference, but I had planned to rip several seasons and store them by episode.  This way I could just go back to them and create clips from them on an as needed basis. Am I doing something wrong with this whole process, or did I just underestimate the size of the files?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hello! I'm trying to adopt a new (read: proper) vidding method and have a question about frame rates. I posted to vidding_tech (along with a separate question about editing directly with avisynth files) but didn't get any bites -- any advice you may have would be fantastic.

The question is: At the moment I'm working with Stargate: Atlantis DVDs, which come up as 29.97 FPS and FILM. When I make the D2Vs, I choose FORCE FILM, which makes them 23.976 FPS and avoids any pesky interlacing. However, I'm told that Premiere Pro doesn't like 23.976 and that I should add a line to my AviSynth scripts saying AssumeFPS(23.98) and edit that way.

BUT! What do I do once I've exported the complete, edited vid? I was reading the Encode to MPEG for con distribution instructions because that's what VividCon requires, and there is no option for 23.98 FPS. Is there a simple line to add to the new AviSynth script for the AVI? Or does it require other steps? Meanwhile, does it matter for online distribution? And does any of this affect the separate audio file I'll have exported?

I posted this to Foolish Passion, but I figured I'd try my luck here.

First off, I am working with Adobe Premiere CS4. I don't know the ins-and-outs of the program like I should, as I just upgraded to it from 6.0 (I know!).

If any of you work in the Buffy/Angel fandoms, you likely have run into this problem: Aspect ratio. Buffy itself is in the standard Full Screen format, with the exception of one episode (Once More With Feeling) that is widescreen. Annoying. Angel is in the widescreen format. Hence, when clipping from either Angel, or OMWF, you have issues of the 'suddenly, there was widescreen' variety. In the past, I have ignored it, cause hey, I was a total newbie and people didn't care about those things back then. Or never told me they did. Now it annoys me. Any way to fix this in CS4? Keep in mind I know next to nothing about the program...>.< I used to know how to solve this! I did. What happened to that?

Also, all of my output videos come out with black bars surrounding them. Like, on all sides. Like my video is trapped in a little box. It wants out! What did I do wrong, and how can I fix it?

Edit: Adding a screen capture of what I mean. I've outlined the black bars in white. This clip is also from widescreen source, and I believe my adobe is autocorrecting somehow, as I didn't so that. I am pretty sure it's gunna end up looking weird if I don't like...figure out what the heck its doing.

I have this problem that when I import the vid from Premiere to Encore, I get a problem.

When I play the preview it loks fine. But when I burn it in the dvd, the top of the vid shows a strap like this:
cut for image )

Also the video after burned looks a little blurred.

Did I messed up in some setting? What are the best settings to burn a high quality Widescreen video?
Just for the record, the videos that I am using were recorded in high quality VCR, so I don't think that is a quality problem :(

My operational sistem is Windows XP 2002.

Another thing that I want to ask is that the video that I'm working is standard, and when I put it in widescreen it gives me side straps like this ).
What am I messing up?

I'm very new with Adobe Premiere (and Encore), so any advice would be highly appreciated.

And If this Encore problem is not appropriated in this community, let me know were I can post that I'll remove this post.

Thank you in advance!

Hi! I am currently in the process of making a vid but I am having some trouble importing the majority of my clips. I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 for the Mac and all of the videos I have are .WMV files. I tried converting them to .AVI but and error message keeps appearing every time I do that says "Unsupported Compression in File". If anyone could help me out with this issue, I would really appreciate it, thanks!

Hello, everybuggy! First time poster, first time video maker, the whole thing. I recently bought Premiere Elements 7, and I'm having trouble with the preview playback as I'm working. The audio is fine, but the video goes in fits and starts, sometimes playing at half speed or not at all, so obviously it's hard to tell how the clips are fitting together. I've tested the source .avi on its own, and it seems fine. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

So I've been wanting to get back into vidding for some time now, and now thanks to tax refund time, I have some money to spend to get some supplies. My main two needs are a nice big external hard drive and some editing software.

Background: I vidded on a PC using Adobe Premiere 6 in, like, the stone age. Now, I have a bright shiny iMac (the basic model, but upgraded to 2 gigs of RAM, running Leopard) and I want to make it my new vidding machine.

My question for you, Mac vidders, is this. Do I spend $100 on Premiere Elements or $300 on Final Cut Express? What does FCE have to justify the extra $200? I know FCP is supposed to be the Holy Grail of Video Editing, but I haven't heard as much about the little sister program.

I don't have any other multimedia stuff that didn't come with the Mac, but I do plan on getting Photoshop Elements as well.

Apologies if this has been covered already - I found plenty of stuff about both in the memories but didn't see any compare/contrasts.

I've been using Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 with Windows XP for ages and for the most part it's been absolutely fine. Then a couple of days ago, I start a new project and try to import video and the program suddenly shuts down. It doesn't freeze, just completely disappears. I figure it's a problem with the video, so I try importing a piece of video that I had previously used without any problems but the same thing happens. I then tried importing audio and that worked fine, but any video makes the program crash.

I then try and open a previous vidding project but it crashes as soon as it opens and it was a project I had no problems with previously.

I search around on google for a bit but I can't find anything that helps. I reinstall the problem but still experience the same program. I download the trial version of Premiere CS3 just to see and the same thing happens again, except this time I can't import audio because it says the file format isn't supported and when I try to import video I get this message: A serious error has occurred and Adobe Premiere Pro needs to shut down.

Again, I've spent time on Google but I haven't found anything that helps so I've come here hoping that someone else has experienced the same problem (and hopefully fixed it) or has some advice.

Thank you.

I'm getting to that point on a vid where I start work on the titles/credits (ie, the point where I'm almost done with the first draft except for the really frustrating bits and want to comfort myself with ego-stroking *g*) and I'm wondering how other people approach titles. I've seen quite a few vids lately do awesome titles using what appears to be After Effects or a similar compositing program, and that's pretty out of the question for me, but I know there's got to be cool stuff I can do with Premiere Pro 2 and Photoshop CS3, which is what I'm working with.

All the titles I've done in the past have just been static text, over black or a short clip, sometimes with more text appearing on the beat, but not in any interesting ways. I sort of have vague ideas of keyframing the position of titles so that they can move into and out of the frame with irregular motions (rather than just rolling on and off) but I don't know where to start, and when I try to figure this stuff out from scratch I usually end up making it way, way harder than it needs to be.

So! How do you do interesting titles/credits without using an image compositing program or dozens upon dozens of tracks and nested sequences? (Like, I'm trying to avoid having a separate layer for each letter, because my computer would cry. 10-15 tracks max would be a good range, perhaps.) Are there titles you've done in past vids that you particularly like or think are good examples? I know I'm not being very specific here but that's because I'm so unclear on the software's capabilities in this regard that I'm not sure where to start having ideas.

(I hope this is the right tag to use--it's not *video* editing exactly but, uh, I do it in Premiere when making a vid, so I don't know what else to call it.)
