Yes it is worth disputing.  Sometimes just filing the initial dispute will resolve it. Here is a great write up of a vidder who went the entire distance. Even if you want to only fill out the initial paperwork, it will help.
In the meantime, here's what you do
1. Create an AO3 account. You will use this to embed your vids and link to it in your vids posts.  This is where people will leave you comments and feedback...that way, if your vid is taken down,  you only need to update the new in one location (your AO3 post). And your comments and kudos won't get deleted.
2. Host your vid in two locations  - vimeo or vidders.net can be one. The other should be Critical Commons. I'd embed Vimeo/Vidders.net and add Critical Commons  as a link to any vids post. If the vid is blocked in only a few countries, add a link to your AO3 placeholder in the notes section (If your vid is blocked in X and Y country, head over here for alternatives). Critical Commons info: http://www.transformativeworks.org/critical-commons/
3. Touch bases with Vidders.net about backing up your entire YouTube channel - including comments.

Vidders.net is open for vid watching & uploads (especially for vids that may be blocked from any of the other video hosting & streaming sites). All videos that stream on the site will be automatically set up for archiving & back up. All videos (yes all 18k plus) hosted on the site hosted since its inception in 2009 and up to the last month have been backed up on a hard drive and shipped off site for safe keeping and preservation of historical record (I'm not exactly sure that means but it sounds good). Full Disclosure: There are some drawbacks to be aware of though if you are planning to host there - video quality is not HD or mobile (maybe a little bit better than VHS quality?) but you can upload as much as you want, comment, & share. You can do so with no concern for strikes, geographic blocking, muting, account deletion because of strikes from prior uploads, forced alternate music tracks, Content ID or pitch shifting. Options for HD and Mobile streaming are available as a premium option wth the same benefits for those interested. More updates on the way but just wanted to get something out short and sweet to start things off given our May month officially starts today.  I may edit this post later if needed or remove it altogether if no longer relevant. If you are already member you can take advantage of this now by logging in and uploading. Vidders.net

Hi everyone,

I recently discovered that when I embed a Vimeo vid on dreamwidth, livejournal and AO3, there's no full screen option showing up among the controls of the player. The weird thing is that the embed code has the words "allow full screen" in it and the full screen option is there in the window where you select the embed options. However, once the vid is posted there's no full screen option anymore. To watch in full screen you have to click the link and watch the vid directly on Vimeo which is inconvenient.

I don't know what changed, I tried the old embed code, which works, but I'd like to understand why the other code doesn't work. Am I missing anything? I tried anything I could think of, I googled this, but found nothing useful. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

ETA: Thanks for the reply! I checked the thread below. I also found and checked the suggestions here, which say that ="true" should be added to the code. I tried it all and it doesn't work. Other people tried and told Vimeo that it doesn't work but they all get the same robotic nonsense reply and at one point the staff says that since all websites are different it's up to the user to figure out what's wrong. Seriously?! Anyway, I don't see what else I can try.

I stumbled across this the other day purely by accident and thought it was worth sharing, just in case I'm not the last to know about it, lol! ;)

YouTube's Audio Library not only offers links to sound effects and free music that can be used without copyright strike fears (for the moment, anyway, you know how quickly things can change ;) ) but also has a list of ad-supported music. So, if you're like me and you've ever uploaded a vid then braced for impact, waiting to see what was going to happen because of the song you've used, here's a way to see what sort of penalties, if any, will be levied against you because of the song (again, this can change quickly but at least it's something). All 3 tabs are searchable. :D

Check out the Audio Library here. Happy vidding! ♥♥♥

BAM Video Vault, the fan run video service is moving. It may go offline as soon as Sept 5, 2015 and there will be downtime until the move is completed. Vidders.net is trying to raise funds to help pay for the move and new service. They have a brief overview here and a donation page here. The site owner says he has backed up the vids, but I always encourage people to make their own backups.

Please feel free to copy, paste, repost or link to this post to help spread the word.

To give an idea of the size of BAM, they currently host 15,000 vids and also provide space for another 3,000 embedded vids. They've been in operation continuously since 2009 and were a safe haven for many fans when iMeem, Viddler and Blip.TV went down. They also offer embedded streaming for vids that have been blocked on Youtube or Vimeo.

I prepared a guide on fighting YouTube copyright claims: posted on the fan-flashworks comm.

And I'll be glad to answer any questions on the topic.

Please note this guide is only meant for fanvidders, as use of video/music in fanvids can be considered fair-use.

Hello, It's been years since I made a vid, but I finally got one finished recently and was wondering what the best place to upload it for hosting was? I remember one of the last vids I made was taken down from youtube for copyright infringement after a few months. Not sure if there is a better option or if youtube is pretty much the way to go for everyone?

[livejournal.com profile] grammarwoman suggested vimeo to me because you can password protect the vid, but I saw someone posted here about them installing some copyright infringement software earlier this year?

Any other suggestions or should I go with youtube? The music is from Fall Out Boy and the images are from Teen Wolf so I don't know if either are very stringent about their copyright rules or not.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It's always sad to hear of the loss of yet another hosting option for vids. It can be a weird combination of both surprise and familiar realization of something we knew in the back of our minds was inevitable. If you've uploaded vids to Viddler for Festivids & are now faced with downloading your videos before March 11 please know you can host them at Vidders.net. Vidders.net is a Vidder run streaming social network. We've been around for 5 years & have been a hosting alternative since Imeem removed video accounts back in June 2009. We are not bounded by limitations of corporation beholden to investors/shareholders or a bottomline.

  • We are AO3 certified embedding video host

  • Already count quite a few Festivid participants as members.

  • Offer simple social Login registrations via Facebook, Twitter, Google, & Yahoo social logins.

  • Independently run & customized with Vidder interests in mind.

  • Currently host more than 18K streaming vids (all backed up)

  • We have just recently backed up all videos on the site on our personal cloud

  • We are currently working on a project to provide download links for all videos for Vidders to share

As of March 11, 2014, Viddler, the vidding streaming service used by Festivids and many other LJ based vidders, is closing free accounts and deleting all vids stored in those free accounts. Vidders can convert to paid accounts by paying a monthly fee. Festivids is not planning on keeping their account active beyond March 11, so if you are a Festivids vidder (or a gift recipient  or just a  Festivids fan), you have until March 11 to download and save the vids. For 2013 Festivids participants, this gives you only a few weeks to upload your vids to another server after reveals.

To give some context, I took a sampling of the older Fetsvids from 2011. Around 25% are stored only on the Festivids Viddler account and the vidder has no backup link or alternative download method.  Plus, many Festivids recipients and Festivids fans, along with non-Festivids vidders, are no longer  monitoring LJ or DW so they may remain unaware of the shut-down until it is to late.

Please help share the info on LJ/DW and on tumblr to get the word out to both vidders and fans of vids so they may have a chance to download the vids.

OK, so the subject line may not be wholly accurate.  This is not a post about how to fight a takedown notice or a forced audio swap of your vid (although you can find helpful tips on both topics from the OTW here).

It is a more practical post: how to use AO3 to create a stable "page" that you and everyone who loves and adores your vids can link to. A post where all the feedback and comments won't disappear overnight when your Yotube/Whatevertube account gets yanked.

The process is this: create a "page" on AO3 for your vid (like this one ). Upload your vid to your preferred streaming site  (see list below). Add the embed code and/or  link on your new AO3 page. If you password protect your vid, you add the password to the A03 post.  Most vidders add the word [Vid] in the title.

And you are done. If the vid at the streaming site gets taken down, you can upload to another site and replace the link. But the feedback, kudos etc you get on A03 won't disappear and you'll only need to update your links in one place. More in depth instructions are here

The OTW's Vidding resource page has a list of streaming video hosts. Feel free to mention any not on the OTW list or offer feedback on the ones that are/are not working for you. And feel free to forward this info to any fan vidding forum, LJ or mailing list.

Today, I encountered a problem with vids uploaded to Vimeo. It seems as if all vids which are password protected aren't working at all. All I got was a black box with no controls whatsoever.

I was able to watch my own vids as long as I was logged in on vimeo, but when I logged out, again, there was only a black box.

I'm using the latest version of firefox on windowsXP, and I definitely haven't changed anything since yesterday. Looking at my stats I have to assume it's pretty much a universal problem as I had no views at all today with my latest vid.

I found this thread on the vimeo help forum: http://www.vimeo.com/forums/topic:28369

So, apparently there *are* others with the same prob, but no solution yet...

Does anybody of you, who uses vimeo as a streaming site, have the same issues?

For the time being I switched off the password protection with all my vids, just to be sure, people are able to watch them. But this is certainly not something I like to keep.

I'm sure many of you who use BAM Video Vault also received a message from the maintainers that they will no longer be able to maintain the site once it cancels its free service. Also, see this notice on dreamwidth which links an article about Ning.

Bummer.

I'm suspecting the streaming sites list is out of date, so I'm proposing a new one?

Here are the ones I know are active. Please comment if you know of others. Obviously this list will be rather date-sensitive as sites seem to go up and come down with alarming frequency.

streaming/download sites )

I think this speaks louder than ever for the need for a fan-run, fan-supported alternative. I'm personally going to be supporting Archive of Our Own (AO3)'s push for a vidding archive. To that end, I'm volunteering to host a cross-fandom, honor-system vidding auction as a fundraiser for the organization (how you can help) if there's enough interest.

Ning is the social networking platform that BAM runs on. There are also several other vidding sites like Buffytube (and it's other Whedon sister show sites), Bones tube, Show your vids and one I created myself called Vidders.net.  These are the largest/active networks I am aware of.

Ning is phasing out free sites so for those free sites it will be Pay to Stay or Free to leave. The announcement made yesterday was more of internal communications made to employees they made transparent. An official announcement will be made in about 2 weeks to Network Creators and the new changes will take place within 90 days. How this effects networks may depend on their new premium changes and how the network mitigates any possible cost whether through support of the community or other efforts. The platform is not perfect but even people who don't like some aspects of it find it hard to find any alternatives. Ning has now forced their hand and Gambling on the promise of better features and support for paying networks. Full Disclosure: I used to admin at BAM before I created my own network on Ning and have in time become very knowledgeable about the platform and company from participating on their company discussion forums for admins of Networks.

For more info about Ning, BAM, and My Network Click here. I'm open to any questions.

Anyone else who's still posting vids at YouTube run into their new "infringement/removal" policy within the past few days?

 http://help.youtube.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=59826

I've been used to protesting if/when any of my previous uploads ran into issues with the automated software that recognizes music and/or video images, which I ran into even as recently as a week ago.

But the one I attempted to upload tonight generated the following, with a button I'm forced to click to acknowledge that I received the harsh warning:

------------------------

ATTENTION

We have received copyright complaint(s) regarding material you posted, as follows:

  • from WMG about Heaven Now Comes the Night - cannellfan
    Video ID: 4BABNu1s7vo

If you are unsure what this means, it is very important that you visit our Copyright Tips guide.

If one of your postings has been misidentified as infringing, you may submit a counter-notification. Information about this process is in our Help Center.

Please note that under Section 512(f) of the Copyright Act, any person who knowingly materially misrepresents that material was disabled due to mistake or misidentification may be liable for damages.

For your reference, a copy of this message has been sent to you via email, and can also be located in your Account Warnings page.

---------------------------

Just wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this latest version of "take down" and/or whether anyone has successfully submitted a "counter-notification" under their new system?

Any thoughts/suggestions? I really didn't want to deal with the hassle of relocating all my vids to another service, but...
[identity profile] dannyblue.livejournal.com
I'm a vidding newbie, and just tried to upload my third video to YouTube. Only for the sound to be muted because the song belongs to WMG.

I didn't think I would have this problem firstly because I'd seen the song used in several vids before, so thought it would be okay. And, while looking around this site, I followed a link to an article about WMG music being allowed on YouTube. But I guess that info must be out of date.

My question is, where else can I post the vid besides YouTube where it won't be fiddled with. Or should I go ahead and post the vid on my own webhost, then embed it in my LJ?

I used to write a technology blog & still scan the RSS feeds of some of them like a watchful cat. Sometimes I see things that don't exactly fit some communities or would be lost among other content so I created a community to address & collect topics related to social networks, technology hacks and news related to Vidding.  It's called [livejournal.com profile] viddersnet

All this will probably make for a very geeky vidding blog.  The hope is to get some fellow techie writers to help contribute useful trips, tricks, news and other creative content as if this was a Daily Vidding Bugle or Planet. This site will also be somewhat connected to the vidding community on Ning Vidders.net

Info page - General info page
Watch - Anyone can watch and get content in their journal
Join as a Member - You can join if you think you might like to contribute some content even casually. If 30 people joined as members and each contributed just one post a month there would be a post for every single day of the year. You can join even if you don't post. The community will be moderated somewhat within tags available or generated by the writing staff.

Big news that may have implications for fan music vids that use music from WMG. You Tube & WMG have seemingly reached an agreement that will allow You Tube to use their content. It has not been made official yet and probably won't be for a couple of weeks but it is basically a done deal. You can find more details about all this in the following article. Click here

Update via Commenter AJ2K : It's official! Click here to see the official announcement on You Tube's Blog

The LJ Staff in [livejournal.com profile] news posted about the Media Embedding Change - all vidders should read since it affects a lot of us.

My YouTube embeds seem to be fine but the ones that I know of that aren't currently working are:

-Vimeo
-blipTV

Anyone else have anything to share on working/non-working video embeds on LJ?

ETA - apparently only YouTube and RuTube are working right now. I can too read the post that I'm linking to, yessire.
