I normally download things in .avi, but right now, I need to convert things from .mpg into .avi. What freeware is recommended, and if the settings need to be changed or set, what do they need to be at for the program you recommend?

I am using Windows vista (32 bit)

VirtualDubMod (it has to be Mod, the original VirtualDub can't process .mpg files)

Koyotesoft free video converter. I swear by this thing. Fast, efficient and good quality with lots of options for customization and not too difficult to learn.

I use TMPGEnc Plus 2.5. The free version will copy stuff to MPEG-1; purchased to MPEG-2 and I think MPEG-4 (I can't remember).

I have tested a lot of converters , if you are not an experienced user, SUPER and other assorted converters, that allow you a a lot of finetuning, will be very confusing and difficult to use.

this one I have used for 3 years, both for converting all kinds of formats (it even does rmvb, real media files, which not many other freeware converters have) into avi, so that I can burn the files to DVD, and play on my divx player and watch on tv:
its very easy, allows you a bit of finetuning, and has several profiles, you just choose as output avi, and it does all the work (plus, it has a big button for downloading and converting youtube vids from flv to avi as well)

I'm also using Vista 32 bit and it was just yesterday, when I was looking for a free, easy to use video converter software. I found many, of course. After reading several reviews by users, I chose Format Factory 1.70, I tried it immediately and it's perfect! I converted mov (Quick Time) files into avi, but it can handle mpeg and many others as well. I tried another one before it (it was Total Converter), but that one put a watermark on the converted file unfortunately.
You can download this one from here (http://www.formatoz.com/).
