Hi everyone,

I ran into a very frustrating problem and I hope someone here can help me.

I rendered a vid as .wmv using Sony Vegas 9 Platiunum. This is what I always use and usually it works just fine. The rendered video is ok, meaning it plays fine in the vlc-player. The file is, however, bigger than these files normally are and - and this is the main problem - it doesn't work on any streaming site I uploaded it to. On Vimeo the playback is very jerky and the vid itself it out of sync. On viddler, the sync is fine, but the picture quality is unbelievably bad, it's pretty much unwatchable. (I had converted the vid from .wmv to .wmv with the flv to many formats converter, because otherwise it wouldn't work well on Vimeo, usually this does the trick and the vid plays fine. In this case, however, there is another problem occurring, one I've never encountered before.)

I tried exporting to different formats and converting to different formats after rendering, but since I don't have any idea why this is happening in the first place, I'm not really making any progress.

The source files are .wmv and .vob. I made vids before which featured these formats and there was no problem with the finished vid.

I don't know what's happening and what I can do. Any help and ideas would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

ETA: Thank you so much for all your suggestions! The .avi to .mp4 thing worked perfectly, I'm so happy!!! This whole thing provided me with a great opportunity to try new things and learn a bit more about the tech stuff and I'm so grateful for your help, thank you!

I'm trying to make a vid with downloaded .mp4 videos as a source, which AviDemux recognises it as h.264 file. I'm using Avidemux for clipping and converting the source into .avi files and Sony Vegas 9 to edit, and I've been running into problems.

1. When I try to render it to .avi with MPEG4 Xvid codec in Vegas, I get the error 'statsfile missing' and 'no compatible video codec found'. It doesn't happen to any other vids. I have the K-Lite Mega pack and the AMVApp. (I'm currently rendering in .wmv for previewing, but the picture quality takes a huge hit and the aspect ratio gets buggered up.)

2. Vegas suddenly has problems opening some files in the timeline. I get a solid black frame in the preview screen and the thumbnails are just a red block.

I tried to clip using VirtualDub, but the resulting image quality on the files are terrible and VirtualDubMod, as far I know of, doesn't do mp4s. I don't know what I'm doing wrong my end, or if I have wrong settings on AviDemux. I've previously only used VDM to clip my source files, and I'm played around with AviDemux, but nothing seems to be happening.

I've just deleted everything in a fit of frustration and looking to start from scratch, so if anyone has alternative software suggestions, I'm very open to it.

I'm on a 32-bit Windows XP. Any help is hugely appreciated!

I'm working on a vid in Sony Vegas 9 right now, and after I render the video, there are some clips at that are extremely dark, with the shadows pitch-black or just overly saturated.

The original clips look normal in VLC when I play them, and they looks normal when I'm editing in Vegas, but the darkness of hair/face/shadows after I render it are much darker than how I see them in Vegas. I clipped them from their downloaded AVI source using VirtualDubMod, and it hasn't given me any crap before now, and no other vidding sources have been bugging up.

I've tried playing around in Vegas. I've tried adding another Level on screen setting and copying the problem clips on that level, I've messed with Colour Curves and other filters, but the colouring is just...off. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it's an over saturated, brightly coloured mess and the characters look sunburnt.

Screenshots under the cut: )

About half the vid is like this. The other half, when the characters are in broad daylight, the colouring remains the same.

I have the same rendering settings as all my other vid projects (Template: NTSC DV, save as type: avi, multichannel mapping unticked), which have come out fine. This is the only one I'm struggling with. I'm on Windows XP.

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Hi folks, me again.

I finished my latest vid but when I rendered it and played it back there were random frames in it. A couple were just black, but some were frames just before or just after the place where cut the clip from the episode. I didn't have this problem with my last vid, but I'm prepared to admit I know little to nothing about export settings, so I thought maybe I'd exported it differently. However, when I used the 'upload to youtube' function I have the same problem, and that definately didn't happen last time.

Thoughts, suggestions, HALP, please :)

EDIT: I think I have the culprit! I noticed a lot of little blue tabs on my timeline and figured out that I had a button pressed for 'automatic crossfades'! D'oh. Only now I'm not sure how to get them off? I've unclicked the buttons but the little blue tabs remain. Any thoughts?

EDIT 2: I have also found, upon extreme zooming, 'big' gaps between some clips. As in, they are invisible when zoomed out and don't seem to leave a gap/black frame or anything when rendered, but...there's a gap right there, I can see it! I can't snap the clips together, if I pull it back it will only move the later clip overtakes the earlier one. My last vid was so easy to export and now this! *sob*

I know this is only loosely related to vidding, but I'm sure dozens of folks here can answer my question, and I've failed to answer it myself, and I'm out of time.

Okay, so I was given a 9GB (not a typo, really) wmv file which needs to played through a Western Digital media box, which as some may know doesn't like wmv. So I have to transfer this monster file, which Super is working on now, but does anyone know an easy way to chop it up into pieces? I don't fancy spending my entire night holding down the fast forward button because my parents "don't understand" complicated technology. I'm suspecting that in this 6 hour long video, there's maybe 3 minutes anyone wants to see. (A family member was in a singing competition, so they probably only care about the one performance.)

So, this has been my weekend. On Friday, I finished the vid I've been working on for the past couple of months. I exported it out of iMovie in DV format and then transferred it to MPEG Streamclip and exported it from there in MP4 and MOV formats. Problem was, the smallest file size I could get while still keeping the quality high was 97 MB. (Erk!) The vid is a little over four minutes long, and the frame size is 854 x 480, which may be part of the problem--I couldn't figure out how to downsize it in MPEG Streamclip without destroying the aspect ratio.

I know I've downloaded plenty of fanvids in the past that were great quality, comparable length to mine, and yet had file sizes of only 20-40 MB. So on Saturday, I spent practically the entire afternoon scouring tutorials, LJ vid communities, and pretty much any other place I could find that might help me figure out how to compress my vid.

During my search, I saw ffmpegX favorably mentioned a number of times, so I downloaded it and gave it a try (actually, many tries). Using that program, I was able to compress the vid to about 37 MB, but the vid ended up so dark I could barely see what was going on. None of the tutorials or posts I saw about ffmpegX mentioned this problem, so I'm at a loss as to how to fix it.

I should mention that I actually couldn't get ffmpegX properly installed--I located all the different components, but when I tried to install, I got this error message: ##sh: -c: line 1: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `'' sh: -c: line 2: syntax error: unexpected end of file. I was still able to use the program (to my surprise), but I'm wondering if the darkness issue might have something to do with those missing components that apparently didn't get installed.

So, all that to say, my question is: can anybody help me figure out how to use ffmpegX to get my vid compressed while still keeping it nice and bright, or alternatively, can anyone tell me how to export it out of iMovie or MPEG Streamclip without ending up with a huge file size? Any help would be appreciated, because I'm still obviously very new at this and it's driving me nuts.

Sorry for the tl;dr. :(

(I'm pretty new to vidding... and a Mac user...)

I've just finished a vid, and have been trying to upload it to the internet.

So far, it seems like I have two options:
1) have a vid with really good picture quality that is too big to put on the net
or
2) have a vid with crappy quality, but that I can put on the net

I've tried compressing the file using Streamclip , which gets me an uploadable vid at the expense of my pretty, pretty pictures.

Is there any way I can get my vid onto the internet (particularly so that I can show my LJ friends somehow) without having to sacrifice the picture quality?

You guys were so helpful the last time I asked a question that I'm back with another. My vid is done and, using Windows Movie Maker, I published it to .wmv and that was fine. The file came out to about 23 megs. I tried saving it to .avi and it came out to a wopping 635 megs! Is there anyway to save the vid to .avi without the file being ridiculously huge?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

So, my use of a totally obsucre program comes back to bite me again, but...on the offchance someone can help/this isn't a program specific issue:

I have a project to render. Even when I render it in DV, like, totally uncompressed, I'm losing a noticable amount of quality. I mean, it's not horrifically unwatchable or anything, but I can definitely notice and it's frustrating.

And I don't understand why. Is this a ridiculous stupid problem with Pinnacle? Is this a problem with my settings? Does this always happen? Do the vidding gods just totally hate me?

After getting to the point where I was ready to tear my hair out last night, I figured out a way that worked for me to get my Premiere export (over 2GB uncompressed AVI with WAV sound) into a 26MB DivX AVI with mp3 sound. The tutorials I used to use haven't worked for me since I've been using Windows Vista, but this method worked and was really easy and reasonably fast.

Here's a link to the tutorial on my journal, in hopes that it might help anyone else who loves vidding but hates trying to get it down to a reasonable size for online distribution: The "Just Make the Damn Thing Smaller, Already!" Tutorial

I don't know much (anything, really) about vidding tech, and I'm not sure if this is the right way or even a good way, but it worked for me. Twice, actually--after I did this and finished my current vid last night, I was able to compress another, older Premiere export AVI I'd given up on months ago, when I first switched to Vista. I hope it's helpful!

So I exported an .avi from Final Cut Pro, and I'm attempting to shrink the file size in ffmpeg, which I have done before and it worked great and everything was shiny, but it just won't do it now. Since I've done it before, I know that it will somehow work on my computer. I just have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've tried every codec pretty much, and I've got no idea. Suggestions before I go insane?

How I Vid

I made a little tutorial on how I vid, written from the perspective of someone who really hates vidding tech. I thought it might be of interest to people who are new to vidding. You can find the entry here.

Hello, i'm new to this community and i hope that somebody can help me.

I've got sony vegas 7 and i'm having real problems at the rendering stage. I've done everything i can to increase performance of my machine, de-fragged, turned off anything memory heavy in the background, done disk clean up, made plenty of room on my hard drive etc and yet the rendering stage is still incredibly slow. It seems to take four hours to do 4 per cent, which is just ridiculous.

Is there a way to make the process quicker? Is there a setting i need to use? a default that wont comprimise quality and size of file but will render quicker? Is the pre-rendering using up memory?

I just want torender my vids quicker so if anyone can help me out on this i would really appreciate it. I'm at the end of my tether with this now,

Thank you in advance,

I have read through a lot of community memories and FAQs, and have asked some fellow vidders, but I have a current conversion issue that I can't seem to find an answer for, despite my poking around....

Adobe Premiere 6.5 saves my project (songvid) as a humongous .avi file with no problem. I have tried saving the project as an online version, but it gives me an error message of "Missing Codec" and won't save it. I was given advice to download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack; I did so, but still get the same "Missing Codec" error message when trying to save as anything other than a humongous .avi file.

If Premiere doesn't like my old and new codecs, what program do I use to make these same humongous .avi files much smaller so that my dial-up friends have a chance to see them someday?

Thanks for any recommendations! =]

Someone asked me about playing songs on TVs and I got to thinking that I've got far more room and bandwidth than I had previously, so thought I might experiment with the idea. What I'll put up later today will be an ISO of a single song - obviously this is very big - but it might be good for someone with a fast download speed and enough space to hold the video until they can burn it to a DVD and erase it from their hard drive.

Does anyone have any advice for me on this? And if it seems like something you might want to pick up, do you have any suggestions for which songs I should put up?
Best, Mary

I was wondering how you rendered your final music video file into a larger viewing size.

Example: Put It Out For Good by [profile] messyjessie58 or any of [personal profile] charmax videos.

Please excuse me if this question has been asked (I looked through the archives as best I could): is anyone familiar with Ulead who can recommend the best file export formats for imeem and for posting to download? I got all used to Debugmode Wax and now I can't make Ulead export in a non-pixely way.

thanks!

I know that you can set up photos in powerpoint and import music to go with it. Is there anyway to export the completed project as a quicktime or windows movie?

Trying to recoded things in VirtualDubMod for a vid and I keep getting this error:

VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 6336 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate: 118.1 + 18.8 kbps)

Which is all well and good, and googling it allowed me to find the fix, but I don't want to fix the audio. The problem is that the vast majority of times it happens, I completely lose the video as well. I can't re-encode. And these are eps that have no problems playing in WMP, not to mention VLC.

I have a feeling this is either going to be something really simple or really hard.

Anyone have any ideas before I go nuts?

I've just put up a new vid based on the movie Master & Commander, set to the Gipsy Kings song Duende, and followed that up with some ways I used VirtualDub to make the vid.
