After getting to the point where I was ready to tear my hair out last night, I figured out a way that worked for me to get my Premiere export (over 2GB uncompressed AVI with WAV sound) into a 26MB DivX AVI with mp3 sound. The tutorials I used to use haven't worked for me since I've been using Windows Vista, but this method worked and was really easy and reasonably fast.

Here's a link to the tutorial on my journal, in hopes that it might help anyone else who loves vidding but hates trying to get it down to a reasonable size for online distribution: The "Just Make the Damn Thing Smaller, Already!" Tutorial

I don't know much (anything, really) about vidding tech, and I'm not sure if this is the right way or even a good way, but it worked for me. Twice, actually--after I did this and finished my current vid last night, I was able to compress another, older Premiere export AVI I'd given up on months ago, when I first switched to Vista. I hope it's helpful!

I saw this post Tutorial: How to Rip DVDs using DVD Shrink and AutoGK, and while my entire possession of DVDs consists of 2 DVDs (one Buffy DVD, and one concert of S.Brightman), so I do not have practical advise or tutorial to give, but I saw 2 mentions of Bitripper, so I thought of linking to the articles here as well:

BitRipper: convert DVDs to AVI or Mpeg with a single click
http://www.freewaregenius.com/2008/04/25/bitripper-convert-dvds-to-avis-with-a-single-click/
Description: BitRipper is an integrated DVD ripping and conversion program that provides AVI or Mpeg creation from DVDs in a single step.
I've been making terrific conversions of DVDs into video files using all freeware tools for a long time, my programs of choice in this regard being AutoGK and more recently Handbrake. Both of these, however, will start processing your files from the DVD/VOB files after the DVD encryption/protection is removed using another, external, program and in most cases after the DVD had been saved ("ripped") to your hard drive. What BitRipper offers is an integrated solution that consolidates the ripping and conversion parts into a single process, and then attempts to make it as simple to run as clicking a single button.

here the other article:
bitRipper : One-Click Free DVD Ripper for Windows
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/bitripper-brings-windows-users-one-click-dvd-ripping/

this one has screencaps, and step by step pics, so if autoGK and DVD shrink wont work for you, you can have a try :)

Does anyone know of a good place for Sony Vegas tutorials?

I'm used to Moviemaker so for me Vegas is very confusing.

I'm looking for websites that have Sony Vegas tutorials. I'm also looking for one that shows you how to change a certain color to another color. Like for example how to change a Pink shirt to a Purple shirt. Issa @ http://www.fracturedfable.net/ used to have that tutorial, but her sites down. Just wondering if anyone else made one.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I made a little tutorial on how I vid, written from the perspective of someone who really hates vidding tech. I thought it might be of interest to people who are new to vidding. You can find the entry here.

preferably in IM chat, because I just don't understand the program well enough to ask useful questions here. Ideally, I'd need someone in RL who could sit beside me so I could point at stuff on the screen and go 'ugh!' (I'm lacking practically the entire vocabulary here) but since it's unlikely that there's a vidder who could give me private lessons where I live, IM will have to do.

I don't really want to do anything *particularly* fancy - mostly just very basic transitions; possibly a white flash, and some slowing down of certain parts. I've played around with the program, on and off, for months, but most of its functions are just utterly mystifying to me.

Hello, i'm new to this community and i hope that somebody can help me.

I've got sony vegas 7 and i'm having real problems at the rendering stage. I've done everything i can to increase performance of my machine, de-fragged, turned off anything memory heavy in the background, done disk clean up, made plenty of room on my hard drive etc and yet the rendering stage is still incredibly slow. It seems to take four hours to do 4 per cent, which is just ridiculous.

Is there a way to make the process quicker? Is there a setting i need to use? a default that wont comprimise quality and size of file but will render quicker? Is the pre-rendering using up memory?

I just want torender my vids quicker so if anyone can help me out on this i would really appreciate it. I'm at the end of my tether with this now,

Thank you in advance,

I wrote a simple step-by-step-tutorial over at my LJ for anybody interested in enhancing their final encode before publishing a vid with Avisynth. It should be accessible for vidders starting out with the program as well as the ones with some experience and hopefully prove itself useful.

The non-magic of Avisynth - Or how to add unnecessary stuff to your finished vid to make it more shiny.

A friend posted this on the Vidder Yahoogroups and I thought I'd share my post with the rest of the world

--- In vidder@yahoogroups.com, my friend wrote: "I hope to learn computer vidding this

Heee! Welcome to the computer vidding world. While I vid on a Mac, I can chat a bit about the software I've seen PC vidders use. (I'll let others talk about hardware)

Windows Media Maker is a very basic program to start with before jumping to Adobe Premiere (which is like the Apple Final Cut Pro I've used). You can download it now and start playing with it: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

Others swear by Ulead Video as a basic intermediary video editing software. Here is a basic tutorial: http://www.foolishpassion.org/Vidding-newbies-Videostudio/index.html

With any computer set-up you need to think 3 steps:

1. How will you video source get into your computer
2. What editing program will you use
3. How will your final vid get out of your computer.

To answer Step #1: there are two ways to get source onto your computer: a) pulling it in via a capture card from a stand alone DVD player or b) 'ripping' it from the DVD/online avi files sitting inside the computer.

If you go the first method, you will need recommendations on the capture card/PC setup (ex. vidders could offer suggestions as to what capture cards they use that is able to remove Macrovision).

As for the second method - - you just need to be able to load the DVD onto the computer and then use free ripping software to decode it. Then, depending on your video editing program, you need to put the ripped footage into a format your editing program can use. Once you pick an editing program (Step 2), we can give more targeted suggestions on how to get the ripped footage into the format needed for the video editing software you have selected.

To answer Step #3: if your plan is to put your vids out on DVD, you need to have a DVD burner. If your plan is to put your vids online, again that is something that most video editing software programs can handle.

So..tutorials

For Windows Movie Maker

and because I love visuals, here is a bare bones video tutorial

and last, these sites offer very basic info on fanvids

Being on a Mac, I can't use this, but [livejournal.com profile] doki sent it to me to share with interested Windows vidders. I quote him below:
PC-using members of your community might be interested in AviSynth filters to remove logos. They can be tricky to use, but they attempt to brighten/darken the area of a transparent logo and/or blur
the surrounding edges into the logo. I tried one out called Xlogo, the results of which you can see here.

filtered

This also demonstrates an attempt to make compressed footage look better.

the script is here )

Please contact [livejournal.com profile] doki with questions, as I still can't even run AviSynth on my computer.

WikiVid

edited to add: my only cautionary comment is that we do not know who is running this - nor if they are fannish.  Great set of links - do not post any of your vids or weblinks there without checking around first.

Look at this interesting set of diverse topics they have there - many have nothing to do with vidding.

Hay all. It's my first time ever to try and make a fanvid of anything so I'm a noobie, yeah. XD

I need help with WMM. I tried to import a video file which is avi and this message come up:

blahblahfile.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Does anyone know what codec that is?

In conjunction with the "Vidding Newbies" panel at VividCon, I have set up a community for folks like us called...wait for it...[livejournal.com profile] viddingnewbies. (Were you surprised? I was surprised.)

It's still very much in the early stages, but we'd like it to become a place where new vidders (or people thinking about trying vidding) can come ask questions that everyone here has heard a million times. With new technology arriving every year and new people coming into the community, being pointed to the Memories section doesn't always cut it. And hey, newbie camaraderie is never a bad thing.

So please feel free to hop over and join (whether you're a newbie asking questions or an old pro willing to provide us some answers). I'm currently looking for volunteers (newbie or not) to co-moderate, so please drop me a line if you'd be interested in helping out. Thanks!

To coincide with the Vividcon 2007 Tech Panel of Doom, I developed a number of methods for people to help them with calculating aspect ratios. All of the following methods work in basically the same way computationally, so the only difference is which you prefer to use.

Aspect Ratio Calculators

To use any of the above you need to know:
  1. The size of the clip you want to resize.

  2. The source type (PC, NTSC 4:3 etc)

  3. The target type (PC, NTSC 4:3 etc)

  4. One of the dimensions you are aiming for (width or height)

Example use: resize all of your clips from different sources to have a height of 480 at NTSC 4:3 and then crop any that are wider than 720 (pan and scanning the footage to fit an NTSC dvd frame).

The above tools are in part thanks to [livejournal.com profile] trythil and his excellent and actually much more advance AMV Resize Calculator which works fine for me but can be a little complex for intermediate users.

Hey, I really need y'all's help :( I am trying to convert a DVD file to a .avi file. I have SmartRipper, and I seem to have come up with one or several .vob files. I guess I'm supposed to use DVD2AVI to convert the .vob to .avi but I don't know HOW. I have been screwing around with this for two days now, and my brain is about to explode! (See my icon? Yeah, that's about to be me.)

So please, please, have pity on my poor head! Any and all help with how to proceed shall receive my firstborn child, in addition to my undying devotion.

Thanks!

Hi, this might be the wrong place for this question, but I was wondering how to make fanvids with clips from TV episodes that are not out on DVD yet. Can you use clips from episodes bought on iTunes? I don't think so, 'cause those are in a protected format, right?

I'm pretty new at this, I'm on a Mac OS X, and I use iMovie. Thanks for any help.
