What tools do you use to gather footage for vidding? How do you rip, convert, contort, and cajole source video into the format your editing program works with? This survey will crowd-source this information. The more people share, the more we can learn from each other. Tools you love, things you tried that weren't worth the time and effort, all your vidding experience is valuable.

We all have our preferences, we always will. There's still room to learn from others, find new things to try, new tools to try.

There's space for DVD ripping software, torrent sites, and more. The opinions entered can be anything from "this is perfect and I use it exclusively" to "tried it, didn't work, never again" and even in between. The aggregate data will include as much or as little personal comments as each person wants.

Yesterday, I tried to import video files- avi- into Sony Vegas to start a new project. But when I tried to drag the media onto the timeline, only the audio appeared. I kept trying to access the video part of the file, but all it told me was "media offline." Other files were working, so I figured the ones I had were just corrupted or something, so I deleted them and downloaded new ones. Still nothing:

See that tiny blip on the "voice" track? That's all the program will read. I tried importing other files, and they fared a bit better in that the program would read all of the audio track, but the video still wouldn't appear. Is this a codec issue? Or a program one?

Question

I had a question and I'm not sure where to find the answer. I asked this on a vid site a while ago and was told that 'one's better than the other.' No help at all, right? So here it is: what is the difference between a xvid .avi file and a divx .avi file? Which one is better? Okay, that's two questions but they're related :D

If I got the tags wrong, I'm sorry!

I'm sure this haas been asked in many different ways, but I can't find one that really helps me.

Sony Vegas Pro won't open .avi files. When I drag and drop onto the timeline I recieve the error message:

"An error occured while opening a codec."

I've been trying so many different codes, it's sent me dizzy!

I know there's the possibility of converting. But it takes quite a lot of space and can take long time, too.

So, could anyone help with this problem, please?

Hello! I have an idea for a vid I want to make centered on a musician, using footage of interviews, performances, and music videos. I now realize that I have more than ten sources from which I want to edit clips, and each of these sources is in a different format, with different aspect ratios, frames per second, etc.

(Examples) )

Is this venture doomed from the start? I know it's been done before, but I'm also still a relative n00b. Does anyone have any advice or know of any guides for this sort of project using Final Cut Pro? Thanks!

Help please

I'm not completely new to vidding but I don't do it often. I mainly use Windows Movie Maker, cause I can't afford Sony Vegas T_T, and I have run into a problem.

I am trying to import a video that I converted from .mov to .wmv. Clicking Import Media I select the video file and I get the following error message:

The file C:\Users\Gateway_User\Pictures\2009-05-04 lexi\lexi043.wmv is not indexed and cannot be imported.

The file C:\Users\Gateway_User\Pictures\2009-05-04 lexi\lexi043.wmv is not indexed and cannot be imported.

I tried using the Windows Help for WMM but found nothing.

Help? Suggestions? Solutions?

I have a question regarding importing into WMM... primarily what the hell do I need to do in order to be able to just import my poor .avi files into WMM. The memories section of the comm hasn't been helpful, even as I go through the tuts of Vdubmod and other such things.

Hay all. It's my first time ever to try and make a fanvid of anything so I'm a noobie, yeah. XD

I need help with WMM. I tried to import a video file which is avi and this message come up:

blahblahfile.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Does anyone know what codec that is?

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Movie Maker 6.0.6. I'm trying to import an .avi file, and it won't play in WMM. Just shows a blank screen with no sound.

I checked the compatibility tab under options and the only thing listed is AVI Decompresser 6.6.6. Does anyone know how to get WMM to use the other codecs I've installed?

Help?

Edit:
It does this to every avi I've tried so far, but seems to open wmv and mpeg just fine.
