I'm sure this haas been asked in many different ways, but I can't find one that really helps me.

Sony Vegas Pro won't open .avi files. When I drag and drop onto the timeline I recieve the error message:

"An error occured while opening a codec."

I've been trying so many different codes, it's sent me dizzy!

I know there's the possibility of converting. But it takes quite a lot of space and can take long time, too.

So, could anyone help with this problem, please?

Is there *any* program for Windows (I have Vista) that would allow me to put about 16 videos onto the screen at the same time, sort of like the end of Love Actually? Freeware is fine, but I am happy to spend to get something good.

If it is possible to do this in Sony Vegas, please let me know if there's a tutorial for it, because I can't find it within the program itself.

After getting to the point where I was ready to tear my hair out last night, I figured out a way that worked for me to get my Premiere export (over 2GB uncompressed AVI with WAV sound) into a 26MB DivX AVI with mp3 sound. The tutorials I used to use haven't worked for me since I've been using Windows Vista, but this method worked and was really easy and reasonably fast.

Here's a link to the tutorial on my journal, in hopes that it might help anyone else who loves vidding but hates trying to get it down to a reasonable size for online distribution: The "Just Make the Damn Thing Smaller, Already!" Tutorial

I don't know much (anything, really) about vidding tech, and I'm not sure if this is the right way or even a good way, but it worked for me. Twice, actually--after I did this and finished my current vid last night, I was able to compress another, older Premiere export AVI I'd given up on months ago, when I first switched to Vista. I hope it's helpful!

I am not entirely hopeful on hearing any good news on this situation, but it doesn't hurt to try.

I have just made the transition over from my rapidly fossilising XP desktop to a Dell Studio 17 laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.00GHz, 3GB DDR2 RAM, 250 GB SATA HD, Windows Vista Home Premium w/SP1). The only version of Premiere I have is 6.0 (I know, I know. I think fossils are pretty?). I grabbed the Vista codec pack, too, just in case.

I can get the software to load. I can import my clips (no audio, encoded with Huffy). I can even actually edit them.

I cannot, however, preview or export. I am told:
"An error occurred while making the movie. Error writing file (disk full?)."
and
"An error occurred. Error writing file (disk full?)."

I find it somewhat amusing that it has to tell me the same thing twice, the second time slightly more condensed, and that with "disk full?" it's like Premiere is asking me what the problem is. Like I know!

So is this a compatibility thing between Vista and Premiere 6.0, or is there perhaps something I have forgotten to do that I can do so that I could possibly start vidding again someday?

Could anyone here please point me to good software reviews that are written from a vidder's perspective? I've looked at the reviews page at AMV.org but most of the reviews are too short for me to compare.

My problem is: I've made some AMVs before (never posted it) using Ulead and now I'm trying to choose a good program to develop. I've found that I learn programs quite fast with guides and tutorials, so I'm looking for something that's simple enough for a beginner/intermediate level but one I can keep as I get better (also, one that doesn't crash a lot?). I've found a few at eBay, and I'm trying to choose between Adobe Premiere 4, Premiere Pro, Pinnacle Video 11, and Ulead Video Studio 7. I've also thought about Sony Vegas, but one look at a screenshot had me hiding.

I have a 2GB RAM and Windows Vista.

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

I have a pro-writer friend who is making vids to go with her books, and she's having some technical issues with her software.  I have no answers, but hoped someone here might have a helpful suggestion or two.

It seems she is unable to run her editing program (Sony Vegas) for more than 10 minutes without it crashing.  Now the sound has disappered from not only Vegas, but her whole computer.  Anyone had these issues before?  She thinks it might be a Vista problem (although her version of Vegas is supposed to be Vista compatible).

In case it helps, these are her specs:
HP Pavilion dv9000
AMD Turion 64x2 1.6ghz
958 RAM
32-Bit Operating System
Running Windows Vista

So far the only advice I've had for her is "buy a Mac" so if anyone could come up with a less expensive solution, she'd me most grateful.

I have a fairly new PC, Vista operating system, only a couple of months old. Every time I run either Adobe Premiere 6.5 or Ulead 11.5 Plus, both programmes crash the moment I start trying to make a video. Every. Single. Time. And it's driving me nuts.

Anyone know why this is happening? Is there a way to solve this? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

I recently upgraded to Windows Vista and have found that my DVD Shrink won't work with it. Could someone recommend another ripping program and perhaps a tutorial for it? I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Movie Maker 6.0.6. I'm trying to import an .avi file, and it won't play in WMM. Just shows a blank screen with no sound.

I checked the compatibility tab under options and the only thing listed is AVI Decompresser 6.6.6. Does anyone know how to get WMM to use the other codecs I've installed?

Screenshots:
General Tab | Advanced Tab | Compatibility Tab

Help?

Edit:
It does this to every avi I've tried so far, but seems to open wmv and mpeg just fine.
