Since the very first [livejournal.com profile] wincon, the annual Vid Show has been a much-loved and highly-attended staple of the convention. We've laughed, we've cried, we've drooled at the hotness... now it's time to look back at the last nine years of amazing music vids, and we need your help!

To celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of Wincon, we will be showing a special vid show (in addition to our regular one) that consists of the most popular vids from the last nine vid shows! To keep you from being too overwhelmed, there will be three polls staggered over the next few weeks (the first is already opened) - Pay attention to Wincon's Twitter and Tumblr for announcements when the polls are opening and closing, and please take some time out of your busy schedules to check the polls out! Vote for your favorite vids from Wincon's past, and the vids with the most votes from each year will be compiled into the Anniversary Vid Show and shown at Wincon!

(Click here for more information and dates for the polls!)

Does anyone like the idea of a vidding land comm? For those who don't know, a land comm is an interactive challenge community where you compete in teams during a round. I have been toying with the idea of one dedicated to vidding but without the points/team aspect because vidding is hard enough without the pressure of competing. But I really like the idea of an interactive community that's intended to help you make vids.

If this interests you and you have a moment, I would appreciate you filling out this short survey so I can gauge interest. I would also appreciate you sharing this post around as well :)

What tools do you use to gather footage for vidding? How do you rip, convert, contort, and cajole source video into the format your editing program works with? This survey will crowd-source this information. The more people share, the more we can learn from each other. Tools you love, things you tried that weren't worth the time and effort, all your vidding experience is valuable.

We all have our preferences, we always will. There's still room to learn from others, find new things to try, new tools to try.

There's space for DVD ripping software, torrent sites, and more. The opinions entered can be anything from "this is perfect and I use it exclusively" to "tried it, didn't work, never again" and even in between. The aggregate data will include as much or as little personal comments as each person wants.

Hi vidders! I have a poll/discussion post set up here about a new vidding challenge I'm going to run called Take 2. The general idea is to remake an old vid of yours -- Maybe you look back on a vid that you KNOW would look better (or just different) if you made it today, or maybe you have always been bothered by the fact that the clip of House and Wilson riding off into the sunset aired two years AFTER you made the House/Wilson vid of your heart. Whatever reason you have for wanting to remake that vid, here is your excuse to finally do it! More information is available at the post. Please feel free to spread the word!

Hi,

I've been toying with the idea of a multi-fandom vid challenge, in the style of a comment vid meme. Basically, anyone who has an idea or song for a vid would leave it in a comment and vidder would claim a prompt that interested them, make a vid and share it.

Why you may ask? I think it would be a great way to inspire vidders, it would allow non vidders (or vidders if they wish) to request a fanvid (there's not a lot of opportunity to do that I feel - unless you win a vidder in an auction or have a good vidding friend), it would be a way to engage with other fans and to enjoy the feeling of making a vid for someone else.

However. This won't work if vidders aren't interested. So I thought I'd conduct a poll to gauge the interest and see if it's something worth pursuing. It's in no way binding of course.

I have no desire to clash with any other vidding challenges (namely the awesome [livejournal.com profile] festivids) so if something like this did happen the timing would be taken into consideration.

Also, I am not precious about this. If there's no place for it I'd rather be told. :)

Hi, my name is Andrea, though I'm more commonly known as redhillbones online. I've been a member of fandom for a little over ten years now so when I decided to pursue a degree in media I decided to focus on fan studies. My thesis is on fan-run charity auctions, like Sweet Charity, and why people participate in them. I'm posting here, at vidding, because I know that a ton of the vidders who post here have participated in these auctions -- I've bought some vids of theirs myself as well as offered my own goods -- so I figured this would be a great place to select victims participants.

If you've participated in a fan-run charity auction in the past or even if you've seen them around but chosen not to participate for some reason I'd really appreciate you taking fifteen minutes to fill out a 28 question survey about your choices. All the research will be kept confidential (you can read more about that here or by clicking the link to the survey below) and is just for my thesis.

In my experience fans are usually pretty cooperative and willing to help out people in need, which is what got me interested in this project in the first place. I'm trying to answer why fans choose to use their fannish qualities in an altruistic way -- basically, are these charities about altruism, about getting cool goodies, or something in between? The survey is completely voluntary and you'll only be identified by the screenname you submit if you decide to participate.

For a longer explanation and more about how the research will be used please click the link HERE

I'm sure many of you who use BAM Video Vault also received a message from the maintainers that they will no longer be able to maintain the site once it cancels its free service. Also, see this notice on dreamwidth which links an article about Ning.

Bummer.

I'm suspecting the streaming sites list is out of date, so I'm proposing a new one?

Here are the ones I know are active. Please comment if you know of others. Obviously this list will be rather date-sensitive as sites seem to go up and come down with alarming frequency.

I think this speaks louder than ever for the need for a fan-run, fan-supported alternative. I'm personally going to be supporting Archive of Our Own (AO3)'s push for a vidding archive. To that end, I'm volunteering to host a cross-fandom, honor-system vidding auction as a fundraiser for the organization (how you can help) if there's enough interest.

Signal boosting this, because I think Casey's a worthy scholar: Casey Fiesler, who was on a panel I moderated at 2009's IP/Gender on Fanworks and Intellectual Property, is doing research on online creativity and intellectual property law. She's looking for people to interview on the phone or by Skype. If you're interested, here's her call for respondents:

Do You Create and Share Stuff Online?

(She's also interested in fan fiction writers, fan artists, musicians etc, so pass it on if you know someone who'd be willing.)

I'm polling to see if there is interest in a second Vidukon, a vidding convention in the UK, to be held in 2010/11. Join [livejournal.com profile] vidukon for updates.

I'm also polling on vidding chats, either in a separate community or in people's personal journals.

All feedback welcome!

[livejournal.com profile] bradcpu and I have plans to set up an annual vidding awards. We are planning to hold the inaugural round in January 2008. One submission per vidder, and the vid must have been posted/premiered sometime in 2007.

Details are here.

We are trying to get a general idea of how many people might be interested in participating. Also looking for talented web designers/graphic artists to design/maintain the site and make the awards. If you're interested in either, please drop us a line. Thanks! :)

A few days ago I posted a poll asking whether people have sought out music they've heard in vids, and, if so, whether they obtained the music through legal purchases.

As of this posting, 165 people had responded. In this post, I summarize the results.

A Poll

It's been reported in several places recently that YouTube is developing some kind of software to automatically search its files for copyrighted music, although it's unclear whether YouTube will work out revenue sharing deals with the copyright holders, or whether instead it will demand that the material be removed.

I'm curious about something. In the past year or two, I have made countless, legal, music purchases solely due to vids. Sometimes I'll buy a whole CD, (usually used, but sometimes new), or sometimes I'll just buy a song from a downloading service, but always, it's because of something I heard in a vid.

So I'm wondering: How many other people have made legal music purchases as a result of something they've seen in a vid? And, umm, if you're uncomfortable answering with your name attached, maybe just drop a comment anonymously?

[Poll #916265]

I'll leave this up for a while and summarize the results and comments in a later post.

I tallied the results and posted them here. Thanks to all who played along.

Gold stars to the 150 of you who contributed to the Vidding Habits poll I posted on Friday! I'm all warm and fuzzy inside.

discussion of results )

Thanks again to everyone who participated. I think the results here really speak positively for the vidding community and provide evidence that we're not only taking part in each other's art, but doing so actively and enjoyably.
