I have read through a lot of community memories and FAQs, and have asked some fellow vidders, but I have a current conversion issue that I can't seem to find an answer for, despite my poking around....

Adobe Premiere 6.5 saves my project (songvid) as a humongous .avi file with no problem. I have tried saving the project as an online version, but it gives me an error message of "Missing Codec" and won't save it. I was given advice to download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack; I did so, but still get the same "Missing Codec" error message when trying to save as anything other than a humongous .avi file.

If Premiere doesn't like my old and new codecs, what program do I use to make these same humongous .avi files much smaller so that my dial-up friends have a chance to see them someday?

Thanks for any recommendations! =]

I like Virtual Dub (http://www.virtualdub.org/").

I know its a cheapie but... whenever I want to show a friend - dialup or not - a real quick vid clip, I always use Windows Movie Maker. Not usually for vids, though; but the .wmv output is really great for small sized files. Naturally, you lose a lot of quality in the process, which may or may not matter depending on what kind of vid you created (effects used, lots of action, etc.)

Divx/xvid, though, may be your best shot. AutoGK (http://www.autogk.me.uk/) is an awesome video converter using those codecs; you can output to set resolutions, or create your own. (Dial-up users may prefer smaller resolutions). Also, set your preferred output MB size. May sound complicated, but the program is so simple.

Beyond that...can't think of anything else, I'm afraid. Hope those will help. And, if all else fails, there's always youtube =)

Shalott AKA [livejournal.com profile] astolat has a step-by-step explanation of how to use VirtualDub (and now VirtualDubMod) to encode a vid for online distribution.
http://astolat.livejournal.com/51221.html#cutid2

Her first step is to get and install the AMV App which installs the XviD and MP3 codecs for you along with Virtual Dub Mod.

AMV App: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/amvapp.html

Hope that helps!

The lovely [livejournal.com profile] charmax turned me onto AutoGK (http://www.autogk.me.uk) and I've never looked back. It's very easy to use and encodes to either Xvid (recommended) or Divx. Personally I find it a lot easier and cleaner than VirtualDub.

Just a thought - perhaps the problem with your missing codec isn't to do with video codecs, but the fact that you might not have the MP3 codec installed? Whatever the case, I second the suggestion above to download the AMVApp. It's a very useful package.
