Problem with iMovie

My clips in iMovie sometimes stutter a bit when I play them back. The needle (for lack of a better word) will come to a standstill for a second or even two before resuming play. This will make my clips lag behind the music.

However, when I export my works in progress, everything — clips and music — seems to line up OK.

Does anyone else have this stuttering problem with iMovie? If so, what do you do about it?

Have you tried shutting down most (or all) other programs on your computer? Do you vid off an external hard drive? It might just be that your CPU usage is getting too high. I remember having that problem with iMovie before and it was usually when I just had too much other background stuff going on. Sometimes just closing the program and reopening it again will help, too.
