Hey everyone, I've got an idea for a new vid, which is a trailer for a book called Green Rider by Kristen Britain, using footage and music from Lord of the Rings.

My problem is, I've never made a trailer before, let alone seen a trailer based on a book. Since there's no audio quotes I can use for the trailer (well none that I can think of, if you have any suggestions please let me know!), I'm going to have to use writing to convey to the audience what the book's about. And working out what to write is where I'm kind of stuck.

So pretty much I'd love any tips at all, on anything from making fan-trailers in general to the more specifics of my particular vid. And if anyone, preferably someone who's read Green Rider before and so understands what I'm trying to get across, would be willing to take a look at my vid drafts as I'm making the trailer and give me critique as well as suggestions, I'd be really grateful.

I'm a relative newbie to the world of vidding. exposition ) On the offchance it'll help some other newbie out there, I figured it probably wouldn't hurt to type out what I've managed to piece together and put it where someone other than myself could see it. my ramble )

So hey. I'm looking for a song editing mentor who wouldn't mind acting as a sounding board (oh, gah, pun not intended) in my freshmen adventures in song editing. In all cases I know what I want the song to end up sounding like, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting there and I'm just looking for someone who'd be willing to listen to my attempts and offer suggestions. Sooooo....basically a song beta, if you will.

There are two songs that I'm currently trying to edit into submission. The first is actually a co-edited project, so it's not just me seeking guidence--[livejournal.com profile] mordororbust and I are making a vid to the song "I'll Remember" by Madonna. (And, yes, feel free to judge our newbie pop music vidding, though it probably won't make an ounce of difference—not only have we embraced our shame, we are ridiculously fond of the concept. *g*) We're cutting out two segments at the end of the song and have failed miserably in making it seamless. On the second song I'm flying solo; it's "Blue Caravan" by Vienna Teng. I'm trying to cut out the middle verse, which translates to about 50 seconds. For each I've got a draft of the edited song (or many drafts in the case of "I'll Remember"), but, as you might guess from this post, they are rather unpolished.

Also, if anyone could recommend a good guide for audio editing (especially audio editing on a mac), that would be great. I've read (and reread and reread and reread again) [livejournal.com profile] heresluck's audio editing post, but if there are any others that people could recommend I would appreciate it!

Aaaand, though I don't know if this matters, I've been doing all of the song editing so far on Final Cut Pro.

Help please! Thanks. *g*

I have a vid done in Windows Movie Maker. I'd like to submit to Escapade, but the instructions are as good as Greek to me. Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to change the file to meet these requirements?

Electronic Submission:

1. Your vid should be submitted as two separate files: A video file encoded in MPEG-2, at 720x480 full-screen resolution, NTSC, using a 5500-6500 kpbs bitrate, and saved with an "m2v" suffix, and an audio file encoded at 48kz in WAV or AIFF format.
2. Each vid must have 10-30 seconds of silent black space at the beginning and end.
3. Use the following naming convention:

vidpriority_yourname_songtitle.{wav,m2v}
(Note: leave out spaces, all punctuation and special characters)

Example:
The files for the first-priority vid submitted by vidder Super-Amazing Vidder!! to the song I'm A Little Teapot would be named:
1_superamazingvidder_imalittleteapot.m2v
1_superamazingvidder_imalittleteapot.wav

When I look at the saving options for WMV, these are my options. I have no clue if any of those match up with the requirements above:

Any advice or easy answer?

Thanks!

OK. Some background info before my query :)

I am a medium skill vidder (imo). My fandom is basically the works of Ewan McGregor, so much Star Wars vidding but also all his other films, TV work and slideshows of the pretty (although my eye does stray from time to time ;D)
I am using Windows Movie Maker and have no funds to speak of to spend out.

I have recently read and taken on board some very sound general advice on vidding principles - not least of which is that editing to either shorten or rearrange a song is a GOOD THING quite often. Now I went searching for a free or reasonably priced application and found Fleximusic Wave Editor. I 've been able to chop a song about a bit, but with zero level of accuracy and nowhere near good enough to use. I'm drowning here! I am not a musician, so I so wonder if the technicality of it will be totally beyond me anyway.

My QUESTION is:
Does anyone have any advice or can point me to tutorials for Fleximusic Wave Editor so that I can test it out while my trial period with it lasts?

OR are there any other recommendations of applications that are simple to use and that come with tutorials for the complete beginner in this field?

In this and in all aspects of vidding I want to make progress, increase my skill level and audience enjoyment, and I really would appreciate any advice that anyone can come up with. I just hope it won't fall on stony ground ;D

Thanks in advance :)

I recently found out about how you can change the aspect ratio in WMM2 and I was wondering if I could rip my DVDs in a 16.9 ratio without it looking stretched out. How do I know if I can do that?

Also, are there any good tutorials out there about DVD ripping? I have only used one that deals with VirtualDub and AudioSync and I'm looking to find others just to see which works best.

Thanks!

I just switched from a PC to a Mac, and I'm attempting to make my first video in iMovie, having previously used Windows Movie Maker. I have two questions that I hope you nice people can help me with.

1) When I was importing my video (episodes of a TV show in .mp4 format, 350 MB apiece if it matters) and I asked it to import five episodes, the first four imported properly and quickly. The fifth is taking a really long time. It says it's got 180+ minutes left to finish importing, and it's already been going for almost half an hour. I tried canceling it and restarting it, but that didn't help. I'm willing to be patient and wait if this is simply something that is normal for the program, but since it didn't do this with the first four episodes, I'm guessing this isn't normal. Any suggestions on what to do?

2) I've looked in the memories, but mostly what I've found under the iMovie section are just questions like this one or about other aspects of the program. Are there any good, basic tutorials for iMovie as a whole? Any suggestions you might have would be lovely.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

ETA: Got it. Thanks to everyone for their help. :)

Here is a list of vidding tutorials covering everything from ripping your DVD footage, to editing, to how to structure a vid, and export options for encoding for conventions. It was originally created for Anime vidders but live action vidders will find it useful

For [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn, and any Mac vidders who are vidding with ripped DVD letterbox (16:9) source and iMovie:

If you are having trouble with aspect ratio on your clips, you can export the clips with black bars at the correct aspect ratio for iMovie by using the program [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn recommended a while back, MPEG Streamclip. What you need to do is choose the following settings:

Export to Quicktime-->
Compression: APPLE DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Frame Size: Custom-->720 x 360
Cropping: click checkbox on-->set values as: Top = -60, Left = 0, Bottom = -60, Right = 0
Make Movie

DVDxDV does not have an equivalent setting. Hope it helps someone. :-)

Question.

Does anyone know where there is a tutorial on "How to get started in vidding!" somewhere on the net? Or is there anyone here who doesn't mind being asked tons of questions about what kind of software they prefer, what works best, etc.? I really am interested in becoming part of the vidding community, but have no idea where to start. As an editing student in film school, I know what we use there to edit video or film, but I figured this was a different bag, and that perhaps you all used differing kinds of programs. If anyone can point me in the direction of a FAQ page or place where I can find a technical tutorial on vidding in general, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Here's a more complete step-by-step how-to for Mac vidders who need to encode their vids for Escapade (or just need to know how to encode in the standard m2v/wav format for DVD authoring). Please let me know if you encounter any problems or if something isn't clear.

Well, it was useful for me when I was trying to find out why my codec wasn't working and I had forgotten that I'd turned on cropping ... *rolls eyes at self*

Anyhow, someone else will probably find this useful if they do a lot of digital work, so bookmark and enjoy!

I have figured out how to mark video with a logo or any other identifying device you like, using Quicktime Pro, and thought I should share with the class.

First, make an image with your logo in the corner or wherever you want it to appear.
This image should be the size of the video you're going to lay it on. For instance, my Kryptonite vid is 352x208 pixels, so that's the size I made my image.

You should choose a color that does not appear in your logo for the background of the picture, and it helps if the background color is easy to find on a hex color chooser, because that's how you'll need to find it on quicktime. I had a white logo on a black background.

Save the image in a high quality format such as BMP. I originally tried JPEG but got lousy results when I did the rest of this process in quicktime.

Second, open the image you just created in quicktime. You should also have a high-quality version of your vid open in quicktime.

To make the background transparent so that the logo can be layed over your video:
With the image as the frontmost window, go to the Movie menu and select "Get movie properties," or use the key command [Apple + J].

The window that pops up will have two pull-down menus. On the left, select "Video track." Then, on the right, select "Graphics mode."

This will bring up another list of options in the main body of the window. Highlight "transparent," which should be the fourth option.

The click on the "Color" button at the bottom of the window. Pick the background color of your image, and hit "Okay." Your background will appear to turn gray; this is Quicktime's way of showing transparency when there is no image underneath a transparent layer.

Close the movie properties box.

On your image time track, select all [Apple + A] and copy [Apple + C].

On your vid time track, select all [Apple + A], then go the Edit menu and choose "Add scaled." This stretches the image duration (one frame) to play over the entire movie clip.

Export the video with your final codec, dimensions, and quality.
This is done by either selecting "Export" on the File menu, or using the key command [Apple + E].
Then choose your video options on the save window that comes up:

The bottom two pull-down menus are "Export:" and "Use:"; on the Export menu select "Movie to quicktime movie."

On the Use menu, select whatever option you prefer. These are not terribly specific, and you can get more control over the encoding by hitting the "Options" button on the right side of the Save window and selecting your encoding options there.

The reason you want to export your movie (and not just save as a self-contained movie) is twofold: Firstly, quicktime plays layered movies choppily. Exporting produces a single layer of video which plays smoothly. Secondly, for the purposes of marking video, you would prefer to distribute a flattened, single-layer version rather than a dual-layer version, because anyone else with QT Pro can peel the logo layer off of a dual-layer version.

And there you have it.
