Hi. I've been vidding as a hobby since May, using WMM of all things. I've tried Ulead (nice, but won't organize imported clips in any way, shape or form - is this because it was a trial version?) and Vegas (more complicated than the actual Video/Radio program I went to college for a while back) but despite its huge, insane bugs, when it works WMM is still the program I understand and can utilize the best.

That is, until it started refusing to save my project. Not as a movie file, but just as the project itself, claiming there wasn't enough memory to complete the operation. As with most claims WMM makes when it farts, this is bull. I have two hard drives with pleeeeeenty of space left on each. WMM won't even save a completely clear "project" with no music, no footage. Not one bit. PapaJohn's site, as usual, is offering jack squat in the way of assistance and I've sorted through the archives here, but no luck. Has anyone else heard of this? How can I get it to behave, please?

How much RAM do you have in your PC? That's usually what causes "not enough memory" errors, not hard disk space. For anything graphics intensive you want at least 1GB of RAM, the more the better.

Hello-
I also use WMM and have learned how to amp it up a little depending on how much juice your starting with of course. In order to up your virtual memory so that WMM will stop complaining take the following steps... Working with XP, so this may be different on different OS's...Go into the start menu, click open the control panel, click open System, In System Properties click Advanced, Look at Performance, this should be first choice (Visual effect, processor schedualing, memory usage, and vitual memory) click on settings, Should be in Performance Options now, click on advanced, and at the bottom see the virtual memory block, click the change button, Now you should be in virtual memory and you want to click the custom size... My initial size is set to 1000Mb and my Maximum size is set to 1500Mb, to change yours just backspace the number and add a new number. My space available is 57,332 Mb... so gage from how much space you have available to how much you want to allot to Virtual Memory. Now hit ok, ok, ok to all open windows and restart your comp. This setting has stopped all of my vitual memory issues with WMM, but it sure has not stopped the other million and 1 problems that I have with it, but it is such a challenge that I could not imagine using another vid maker... Hope that helps :)

Well, there is definitely a problem with space...3079mb is very low... I will assume that you have XP because you were able to follow my directions to the letter... So my next question is how often do you do your disk clean-ups and defragment? These are key elements in clearing up space on you hard drive and especially so for people who download a lot. I disk clean up a few times a day and I defragment every day to every other day... both Disk clean-up and Disk defragment can be found in your start menu/ All Programs/ Accessories/ System Tools... Again that is going on the assumption that you are working with XP... Hope that Helps... Feel Free to Write Again Either Way...

Oh good- I am glad that you figured it all out... I am certainly not a genius at these things, but if I can ever help again, just email....

Just FYI, organizing clips isn't nearly as easy with Ulead as it should be, but it can be done. There's this Library Manager thingy that let's you move clips into groups. Without it, I'd be very overwhelmed. It's very clunky though, so you'll probably want to keep using WMM now that you've started.

Okay, it's been like two months since I did this so of course I've forgotten everything, but looking at it now here's the best I can tell...

-You go to Library Manager, create one or more "Custom Folders" by hitting New, then name them.

-You can switch between the default folder ("Video") and the Custom Folders by using the pulldown menu (down-arrow) next to the word Video in Storyboard mode.

-You can then add external clips by hitting the folder-button, or internal clips by dragging them up from the timeline. I don't think you can move them directly from one folder to another, but you can approximate this by dragging them down to the timeline, switching folders, then dragging them back up.

Hope this helps!

Oh sheesh. I'm at work and I can't reference exactly how the file folder is identified, but in a nutshell....with Ulead, a folder is created on the C: drive that stores (what I am going to call) Temp Files or Preview Files.

Depending on how complex and how long you have worked on this vid, if WMM does the same thing, you can have a ton of HD space taken up by these files. And depending on how much space you have allocated to 'caching', then this might be a part of the problem.

Good Luck!

I'm another WMM user butting in here. Would you locate these temp files and delete them or would you need to keep them on the HD? I'm guessing if the project's complete, you could delete them. Would that cause problems if you were to later try remastering the vid and the temp files were gone?

I just looked at the name of the folder that holds my preview files and it's called MS7 Preview Files (MS7 = Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0).

I occasionally delete all those files even in the middle of vid as sometimes the files just takes up too much HD space. I haven't had any problems doing this.

I don't know how WMM would react, but I would rec that you try this process at the end of a vid after you've generated your final file. Then go back and play with your project file and see how your vid reacts.

Better safe than sorry.
:)

That sounds like a good plan. Thanks!

I don't have much experience with WMM but you might get some help with memory issues by using programs that free up virtual RAM and defrag disk drives continually. I have been using Ashampoo Magical Defrag and FreeRam XP Pro. www.tucows.com and www.cnet.com have download links for programs (most have eval periods or are freeware). I use Cyberlink Power Director for my videos (I tried WMM and threw up my hands after a few tries - I never could get it to work). Power Director's editing controls are easy (very intuitive) and you can use lots of source files. I have used multiple episodes on the same vid with no memory problems (using a laptop with external hd for source). You don't have to cut clips with PD you just select start/stop points. I think you can eval for 30 days at Cyberlink's website. http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_4_ENU.html
