My YT account has been suspended. Won't rant about it here - did plenty enough already - but basically I'm wondering if there's a way to negotiate with the Powers That Be. I've had the account for over two years, and they only now delete my account because of a five-minute clip I uploaded two days ago. Yes, just the one clip. I received no email to remove it, which is the main reason why I'm so pissed off.

damn I'm sorry. A couple of months ago a vid I'd made to Falling Slowly was yanked right after it won the Oscar for original song, and I got an email saying it was removed and not to do it again. They didn't pull anything else or close me down, though.

The DCMA requires YouTube to remove the video first, then notify you. They're not allowed to keep it up once the copyright owner has complained. You're allowed to file a counter-notice if you think the video wasn't actually infringing, and if you win, YouTube puts it back up.

As for your account, I thought YouTube had a three-strikes-and-you're-out policy... Could it be that they removed several of your vids at once?

Daily Show clips are pretty problematic on YouTube, especially given their billion-dollars lawsuit from Viacom. (I got my YouTube account deleted over a TDS fanvid). If you're using YouTube to simply host your vids, but you embed them elsewhere (like your LJ), I'd advise you put in non-specific tags, titles and descriptions like "my video". To make it even safer, disable comments, so keywords won't show up there. Then your videos won't turn up in the YouTube search engine, but if you get your viewers from another site like LJ, it's not a problem.

If you'd like to know for sure which video got you the axe, you can always contact YouTube and tell them one of your video was deleted and you didn't receive a notification. It's probably a hiccups on your email server or theirs, because you're supposed to get one automatically.

The email address the takedown notification comes from is no_reply@youtube.com, so writing there won't do any good. But the address for copyright infringement notifications and counter-notifications is copyright@youtube.com, and the email from which all comments/friends/PM notifications come from is service@youtube.com. So I'd try one of those.

Oh, and another tip: save your favorites and playlists in a separate account, one where you don't upload any video. That way, you won't lose them if you get your account deleted again.
