vidding_livejournal_ark2Okay, I've never done a high-res vid before where I had to correct the aspect ratio. Now I'm doing that, and it's IRRITATING THE SHIT OUT OF ME.
This is going to be hard to explain:
There are two things that I must do in order to use this footage from "2001: A Space Odyssey":
1) Fix the aspect ratio.
2) Get rid of the interlacing lines.
I have been doing this in VirtualDub via the following filters in this order:
1) Resize to 720x406 and then letterboxing back up to 720x480, with interlacing checked.
2) Field bob, smooth/smooth.
This will give me a very pretty output frame with none of those annoying interlacing bits between fields that fuck with your codec and make things jump back and forth and generally look like hell.
However. They result in a problem. A BIG, HUGE, HONKING PROBLEM -- particularly with a movie that has occasional very sharply defined smooth shapes in it, like glowing blue planets and circular space stations and things:
This combination of filters also give a very jagged look to such edges. Formerly smooth, round planets now look jaggedy. Formerly smooth, round space stations look just as bad.
But I need to set those filters in order to do away with all the shit that comes along for the ride with the resizing/interlacing. (I haven't set to forced film, so it's still 30 fps.)
AGH. ANYONE out there with input, please feel free to hand it over. Has anyone else ever tried to cut clips in VirtualDub where they had to accomplish the following things:
1) Resizing to correct the aspect ratio from a rip,
2) Removing interlacing lines, and
3) Preventing jagged edges to sharply defined objects?
This is making me batty, and I REALLY want to remaster this vid at high-res to put it in for Escapade this year. REALLY, REALLY BADLY.
(I have not gone the avisynth route, and I will not for this vid. I am simply recutting the clips at high-res, and that is fine for me. Avisynth may/will come later. I'm frankly a little worried that it will install poorly/incorrectly and end up fucking up or breaking things that are already installed. However, I am not interested in discussing avisynth at the moment and just want to find out if anyone else has found the correct sequence of VDub filters to correct or the problems I've run into without introducing aliasing into smooth round edges.)

Crop and resize directives are given in AVISynth script format, but they are easily reinterpreted into other formats. Just remember the syntax of Crop and Resize:
Crop(left, top, -right, -bottom)
Resize(width, height)
Let me know if this is useful for you. Suggestions to improve usability (I'm sure there's a lot) are also welcome.
