Since there is a lot of activity going on in the vidding community, I thought I'd share some information about vidding tools and the vidding community as a whole. Please feel free to link to this entry in your vidding community.
1. Vidding Communities That Focus On Vidding
There are many fandom specific communities, but there are two general communities. Both offer a place to post your vids (to get a wider audience) and also a place to ask technical questions.
fan_vids (this community is indexed by google)
vidding (note that this vidding community has extensive resources in its memories which you can access here. This community is not indexed by google)
For Mac vidders there is a smaller community called
mac_vidding_101 to ask technical questions. They also have a good memory section here
2. Your One Stop Vidding Newsletter Needs
Volunteer vidders compile weekly lists of vids posted across multiple LJs and communities. Ex. a weekly list of all the Supernatural Vids is here. If you're into Heroes go here
The community that hosts these newsletter is
veni_vidi_vids
Once a week we pull together technical questions, Meta discussions about vidding, links to recs for vids (all fandoms) and the ever so important tracking of take down notices and other copyright issues that might affect vidding. You can find the Meta Vidding Newsletter here.
3. Online Streaming
As an alternative to Youtube, some vidders are using iMeem. If you plan to use iMeem, please read the Vidding Tag guide that fans are using to (a) locate each others vids and (b) keep us flying under the radar so our vids are not removed. A complete set of links to things you need to know about iMeem is here. Also, vidders have set up an iMeem Vidding forum here. Please note that iMeem is a service that is not focused on vidding per se - and that just like Youtube it has it pluses and minuses. One of those pluses is that playback quality is much better than Youtube. The downside is that there is no comment notification (unless the poster is part of your iMeem network - which is why it is important to accept those 'please add me to your network requests.
