Hey guys!

I'm trying to make the switch from WMM to Premiere, because Premiere is kind of orders of magnitude better, but when I upload .avi files into Premiere, I only get the audio tracks, not the video tracks. I've tried this with files from all different sources, and had the same problem every time. (All these files play fine in WMM and WMP, so there's nothing wrong with them.)

Has anyone else had this problem with Premiere? Any suggestions for dealing with it?

Thanks a ton!

I have the same problem when I work with longish vids: at some point, Premiere just doesn't let me import any compressed avi snippets any more (they show up as audio files even though they don't even have an audio track); the only files it lets import correctly are huge uncompressed RGB/YCbCr files. This has happened to me with two vids I am working on, both were close to finished with around three and a half minutes of timeline filled when that particular problem occurred. Restarting Premiere or the computer didn't help, only resporting to the above mentioned uncompressed avis.

So, yes, I have the same problem, unfortunately I don't know how to solve it, only how to work around it, which of course requires a lot more space.

(My specs: P4 3 GHz with 2.5G RAM, WinXP SP2 and Premiere Pro 2.0)

Are these DV/uncompressed AVIs or are they encoded with DivX or XviD? Premiere often has problems with the latter.

You'll either need to re-encode (uncompressed/DV AVIs work best, WMVs can work too if you're low on space), or you can use AVISynth scripts to trick Premiere into reading the DivX files. The downside to AVISynth is that it eats up a LOT of memory and Premiere will continuously freeze up if you import too many scripts.

And when I say AVISynth eats up a lot of memory, I'm talking processing, not disk space.
