I have made some .avi clips from a movie to use in a vid, but when I use the clips in Windows Movie Maker, they have a distortion that makes ripples in the image. I have never encountered this problem before and am at a loss as to why it is happening.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how I can fix this? It's making me nuts!

I'm not an expert on this but it seems like you've got some problems with interlacing. What program are you using to rip the DVDs? If you poke around a bit, see if there are options involving words like "interlacing" or "field order".
