new to the comm- not sure if this is allowed, so if it is not, please delete.

I've just started making fan music videos with Windows Movie Maker, but the majority of the clips I used are ones I downloaded from the web, so they are already on my computer in .AVI format. Trouble is, now I've got into a lot of new fandoms recently and most of the things I want to make vids of- I already have them on DVD, but I don't know how to rip them and covert them to a suitable format to work with in Movie Maker, so I have to wait for days and weeks for files to finish downloading on Bitcomet just so I can use them in WMM even though I already have them on DVD.
This is probably a really basic question, but what programs are there (and which ones are recommended) to use? Please note that I am only a high school student, and I can't pay to purchase programs. If anybody knows where I can download dvd ripper programs for free, great, otherwise any names and i'll try and beg and plead to my parents to get me the hard copy for a birthday or something. I've heard of programs like Xilisoft and Amigo DVD Ripper, but even though I tried to download the free trial versions they all have 30 second clip limits or something like that. I'm pretty proud of the work I put into vidding, and I'm just fed up of having to wait and wait for files to finish downloading before I can get started, by which time my muse for vidding has gone up and out of the window. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

That section of the memories should help. You really should check there first.

LJ hates me today, sorry my post got cut off :p

I use DVD Decrypter and AutoGK, then I use Virtual Dub to chop the AVI file that AutoGK gave me into small workable clips.

If you're looking for a complete walkthrough, you could download AMVApp and follow the guide on how to use it here (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/).

I use these free programmes too and this is the tutorial that started me off. I've found this method perfectly adequate and am still using them several months into my vidding existence.
