The current maintainers of the BMVD ([livejournal.com profile] heresluck and [livejournal.com profile] boniblithe) have decided to give up responsibility for the site. If we can find new maintainers willing to take it on, we're happy to pass along information and backups; if not, we'll be retiring the site.

I'm really sorry if this is repetitive/brainless/etc. but i'm terribly confused and feel like i've searched around everywhere without any success.

Background Info:
- using Windows Movie Maker
- Windows XP
- the episodes i want to use are all on my computer (not on a DVD) through DC++ (peer-to-peer sharing network through my university) in .avi format
- never made a video before

My Dilemma
When i click File>Import Into Collections and click on the episode i'd like, it sends me this message:

The file C:\Documents and Settings\------------------\The Office\Season 3\The Office - 314 The Return.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

I don't understand what to do. I don't know what a codec is but after trying desperately to get some info, i just went on downloads.com and downloaded random codec packs that did not improve my situation at all. Please help!

I've upgraded Paul's Raiders of the Lost Ark video, "Holding Out for a Hero." Yes, I know it's been made a lot, but this might well be the first. If not, then it's one of the first. This is absolutely phenomenal. It condenses the whole story into 4 minutes. Rapid cuts and just about perfect! (39MB; MP4).

And, FINALLY, I've started working in Get Smart. I'm in 7th heaven. Jim Croce's "Operator" for Max and 99 (32 MB; MP4). I'll get a characters page up for Get Smart soon, too.

2007 MEDIAWEST*CON PLAYLIST

The following playlist is in alphabetical order by production group, first for GEN vids then for SLASH. As a reminder for those unfamiliar with how the MWC show is run...it is a competition, in a variety of categories. Producers submit their vids in the following categories:

Humorous
Song Interpretation - Single Fandom
Song Interpretation - Multiple Fandoms
Constructed Reality - Attempts to tell a completely different story using existing footage, often in the form of crossing over two shows/films
Original - (high percentage of footage is camcorder or non-professional)
Credits - original credits for the production group/individual

MWC also runs categories for Flyers and DVD or Video Boxes, but I won't try to list those here.

Here, then, are the videos that premiered Friday night, May 25th, 2007 at the MediaWest*Con 27 vid show:

I'm trying to encode a vid using TMPGEnc, and when I play back the resulting file it slows or gets stuck on some frame(s) of video, throwing the audio and the video out of sync. I've encoded vids to Xvid with TMPGEnc before without any problems. For this one, in addition to Xvid I've also tried DivX and a couple of different Microsoft MPEG codecs, all with the same result.

There was a similar issue in a post in the memories from last year, involving VirtualDub and Divx, but apparently nobody had an explanation or solution at the time. I was hoping either that person had figured it out or someone else had stumbled upon a solution since then.

ETA: Fixed! Though I have no idea what did it. I went back to Xvid from the other codecs, switched from 2-pass to 1-pass mode, changed the audio format to MPEG Layer-3, and closed some other programs that had been open in the background. Could have been any or all of those things. Explanations welcome.

If there aren't any, maybe this can at least be a useful list of things to try for anyone else having the same problem.
