So I'm getting really interested in vids that don't rely on lyrics for their storytelling. I have two - "Circles" by Laura Shapiro and "The Glass" by thingswithwings - but can anyone else point me to any other popular or particularly well done examples? Any fandom is fine :)

I don't know that it's popular or anything, but I thought that [livejournal.com profile] aycheb's Minority Report vid, "Silence", was really excellent.

My favourite is 'Starting on a Journey' by Kay.

[livejournal.com profile] vid_the_grid's recent rec post for instrumental/classical music had some fabulous recs. I was blown away by some of them. And, due to the rec theme, they are lyrics-free.

Instrumentals

Don't have time to track down current recs and my vids are all on external HDs which I can't access ATM, but I knew I had some info already collected from a few years back for VVC regarding instrumentals. In 2005, VVC (VividCon) had an instrumental vid show with some excellent vids. Here's the post-con vid show list with URLs. Some links may no longer work, but it's definitely worth checking out.

VVC 2005 - Instrumental Vid Show

Alas, Barkley's post calling for suggestions for that vid show is now friends-locked. There were a ton of great suggestions, and of course, only a few could be be chosen for the vid show because of time constraints.

You might also consider looking at vids with non-English lyrics, which English speaking vidders often treat as instrumentals by ignoring the lyrics, and which English vid watchers tend to process as instrumentals (even if the vidder does actually know the language/lyrics and vids to the lyrics).

One of my all-time favorite instrumentals is Kanzeyori's SGA vid, Welcome Home. Just gorgeous.

Back in 2005, I hunted up a bunch of Farscape vids for the VVC instrumental show. Farscape vidders have always been fond of instrumentals; as with many fandoms Pompeii is by E.S. Posthumus is a staple *g* but there are many, many others. Here's a few - keep in mind this is just a snapshot in time. Info below cut & pasted from my 2005 reply so some links might be out of date, but the Farscape Fantasy Archive is still online and accessible.

Ashokan Farewell was vidded by Bruce Micales, back in early 2003. You can find the vid at Farscape Fantasy or at Bruce's own website (where there are several formats available).

Bruce Micales has another instrumental vid, set to the theme from Exodus by Ferrane & Teicher - which is music I adore.
Exodus (Focus on Crais, Talyn, and John) 3:29

Curufea has an appropriately creepy, vid featuring the episode Eat Me and using music from the movie Resident Evil. Can be found at Farscape Fantasy or at their own site.

Hynerian Donkey has a lovely vid set to Pachelbel's Canon.

Dallascaper has several Farscape vids set to instrumentals. One of my favorites is a Zhann tribute, using the theme from The Silk Road by Kitaro.

Dallascaper also features the 1812 Overture (Finale) by Tchaikovsky in an early vid.

Adnan Virk also uses the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky in a promo-style Save Farscape vid.

Lytesabre has a wonderfully evocative vid that deals with TalynJohn's death, set to the theme from Requiem For a Dream by Clint Mansell.
Requiem for a Crichton (TalynJohn) 6:43

Lithium's Farcape vid "Touched" was recced, and I'd second that. I think it's still available on her website - not all her vids are online these days.

Lithium Doll also has an excellent promo-style vid set to music by Enigma, but there are extensive voice-overs.
Eyes of Truth (Promo-style vid) 1:26

Really, there are a ton of instrumental vids out there. You might want to scan some of the old VVC vid show playlists, which will list music choices. Check the Vidding LJ Community tags for VVC playlist master posts for various years.

I've done two other instrumentals besides Circles:

The Lonely People (http://blip.tv/file/2296304)
Mixed Nuts (http://blip.tv/file/2303522)

Both seem to be pretty well-liked.

[livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl's His 'n Hers (http://community.livejournal.com/sync_slaying/11428.html) doesn't have lyrics and is fantastic. The voices in the music aren't really voices so much as instruments. The vidder has many instrumentals in her vid tag (), like Ouroboros (http://community.livejournal.com/sync_slaying/6414.html).

Vids without using lyrics

Hello,

you were searching for creating music videos without lyrics. I've done this several times. In my opinion there are four ways in which you can create a music video. I'm a Star Trek Music Video creator, but it applies on all fandoms:

1. Rythm. pace of the music.
2. Feeling. The music let you experience a certain feeling and you use accordingly the right images/scenes
3. Lyrics Story. The story in the music video is played by the images/scenes you use. This music video is mostly character based.
4. Lyrics Text. The difference with 3 is that you don't tell a particular story, but the images comply with the lyrics, but there is no co-herence between them. This music videos has an overall subject mostly.

Type 3 and 4 are not to your interest here. 1 and 2 are. I've created several music videos in those categories. You can find them at http://www.finalfrontiermedia.nl/ffm.php. The following music videos you should download if you want.

Falling into category 1: In Caelum Fero, Fight for Survival, Hailing Frequencies
Falling into category 2: Farewell, Sorrow, Why, The Moment, Ancient West
When your interested:
Falling into category 3: Memories, Hurt
Falling into category 4: At your Side, Kind of Wonderful, We Weren't Born to Follow

Beside my own music videos I've more than 300 Star Trek Music Videos from other people available for download. Just browse the site. If you create Star Trek Music Videos I'm very interested to host them if you want. If so and you want to, you can contact me through the contact form on the website.
