It seems that Imeem is going to be removing all user generated video content on June 30th. The news about it is posted here

So that's it for that site unless I misread the post.

ETA: I just checked and the ability to upload video has been disabled.

Well, is there any other sites that some of us can migrate to now?

Wow, talk about a site that did a 180 since they launched. When I read the news post you linked to, and saw People come to imeem to enjoy music, I was like, THEY DO??? Like pretty much everyone else, they realized user-generated content isn't profitable. I could've told them that when they were in the planning stages.

Several people have recommended Blip.tv (http://blip.tv/), primarily because its TOS is the most reasonable. Quality seems fairly good, but I haven't done a comprehensive analysis.

My concern is this, in their FAQ: Generally speaking you can't upload any video you don't own. This means that if you didn't create the video (and everything else in it!) you can't upload it to blip.tv or any other site. I wonder whether that would turn out to be problematic?

At this point, you know more than I do. (: I'll probably still upload to Blip -- and maybe BAM as well -- and see what happens, but I am up to my eyeballs and haven't had time to do a lot of research.

But you did create the video!

Vis a vis "and everything else is it"--does that mean you need to have given birth to all the actors, built all the houses, farmed the trees? Does that, not to put too fine a point on it, mean only God can upload a video?

BAM Video vault streaming is pretty decent & claim to be "vidder friendly".

I just got an account there a few days ago, when I realized imeem was no longer allowing embedded videos and YouTube kept blocking my vids as soon as I posted them. I really like it, so far...

As someone who is not a serious vidder, but who very much enjoys watching fanvids, I'm frequently curious as to why more people don't host their own vids. My vids are, I must admit, moderately crappy, but I stream them on my own site, and host the higher quality downloads on my site, and it's not prohibitively expensive. I would think that people who have more time and energy invested in vidding would be willing to invest a little bit of money to avoid all the takedowns and migrating. I realize not everyone could afford it, but I'm baffled as to the rarity of it.

I get that, until you factor in the enormous amount of time vidders put into their work, and into dealing with the hassles that come from relying on free hosts.

After 90+ hours of slaving over a hot video editor, I'd think shelling out a little cash would be painless in comparison.

I do shell some coin for hosting . . .

I didn't mean to imply that you specifically did not, that was more of a general comment. My apologies if my comment lacked clarity. It looks to me, from what I've read in this thread, like the options for hosting one's own streaming video have improved, and that the number of people who stream their own video is on the rise.

I, too, host downloads on my own site, but I've never been able to figure out how to make them stream. Too tech-stupid, I guess. But I do agree that someone who is invested in vidding should buckle down and just buy some hosting. My hosting bill is about $50 for a year at GoDaddy, and I don't even use most of it. In fact, I use so little of it that I've often thought of asking around to see if anyone wanted to share the cost and we could each have our own subdomain (which might be a good idea for those interested in having their own hosting but genuinely don't have the full amount it takes). But even on my own, it's still not unreasonably expensive, at all.

, but I've never been able to figure out how to make them stream.

I distinctly remember someone doing a tutorial specifically for this but for the life of me I can't remember who. At first I want to say [livejournal.com profile] leviathan101 but I can't be sure. Maybe they'll speak up if they see this post and point back to their tut.

Knowing my luck, I probably saw it, tried, failed, and then huffed off in frustration. One day I will conquer streaming, but that day won't come until I learn to control my tech-temper. *nods*

I've posted a simplified streaming tutorial on another vidding site. I think I'll be modifying it tonight and then post it here. :) I also did a tutorial (http://community.livejournal.com/vidding/1671806.html) for streaming specifically on LJ way back. I can always try to answer questions about streaming.

No problem! I've since learned how to use SUPER which is a free program that can generate streamable FLV files, so if you can wait a bit, I'll get that tutorial up ASAP. :)

Oh, I'm sure it's a great option. I'm a Mac user, though, so it won't work for me. I do recommend Visual Hub to any Mac users reading this who want to use your tutorial for how to set up streaming but need to convert to .flv format, though. Actually, I recommend it for most conversions. Great program, totally free, and easy to use. And then they can use your tutorial to figure out the next step. :)

Oh! Oops! Well, On2's Flix is available for Macs at least. I actually prefer the quality generated by that program over SUPER's. :)

Your tutorial worked wonderfully! Thank you so much!

Also, I don't know if you maybe wanted to offer Mac users some conversion directions, but in case you did, I uploaded two screenshots of what their Visual Hub settings should be to get the .flv file to upload. You don't have to use them, of course, but I thought I'd mention it in case you wanted to mention it for anyone who might be using a Mac but wanted to follow your tutorial.

They should make sure the "Raw .flv format" box is checked (or else they'll get a .swf file) (http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/299/picture3xyp.png) and they should click the "advanced" button and input these settings (http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1116/picture2biy.png).

Visual Hub was discontinued months ago.

It may be hard to find. It's no longer available at the main site, http://www.techspansion.com/ - there's a note there that it has been discontinued.

I'd be happy to give you a hand. The way I've set up mine is pretty simple, and it's just one of many options. The one thing I do recommend is to put visible links to iTunes and/or Amazon for the content you've used, allowing people to easily access it to buy it legally. Will it protect you if the music industry lawyers come at you? Probably not. But it does put you in the moral right, and also as a vid fan, I appreciate the convenience, and assume I'm not alone in that.

Oh, thank you for that tip. That's a great idea. I hadn't even thought of putting up the iTunes/Amazon links, but that's a great idea. Thank you!

Completely agree with what you've said. I love hosting and streaming my own videos and hate the headaches that seem to come with outside streaming. It just doesn't seem worth it when you can control quality and availability right on your own site. I enjoy streaming my own stuff.

As someone else mentioned above, I think that the two reasons why people don't host and stream is the cost of hosting and 'how to' knowledge. Something for nothing usually wins with the majority, I would think.

From: [identity profile] backup-mars.livejournal.com
The cost makes sense, to an extent. I mean, time is more valuable than money, so after pouring endless hours into a creation, I'd think people would hardly blink at paying a little money to showcase it.

The how-to thing stumps me. Creating a vid is a difficult process. Making it stream is a cakewalk by comparison. I get the right brain versus left brain thing between art and coding, but vidding is a pretty technical art, and creating a flv isn't any harder than ripping the original source. In fact, in my opinion, it's easier.

*shrug*

Fear, maybe? Is it perhaps easier to do now than it was a few years ago, so folks assume it's not easy? I'm glad to see that some people are hosting their own, though. Hopefully it's a trend that will increase, because I think it would increase the stability of the hobby.

I've been hosting my own videos for awhile but haven't gotten around to streaming them yet out of pure laziness. With all the changes going on with video hosts these days I think I'll most likely start streaming my videos in the near future.

I kind of saw the writing on the wall with Imeem when they stopped allowing embeds on sites other than their own. It was just a matter of time.

LOLZ. It hasn't been video friendly since they started pasting giant ads over videos. And capping the limit of uploads per free user.
