I've been working on a vid for a friend and I've just finished it, but I'm having a spot of bother saving it. I'm using Ulead Video Studio 11 and am trying to save it as an .avi file, but when I do and try to open it in BSPlayer, I get a little 'unknown file format DIV3' message pop up and only plays the audio. It plays fine with VLCPlayer, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm saving it with an Xvid-MPEG4 compression, because if I do it uncompressed the file is huge. Can someone please tell me how to get it right?

If it plays fine in VLC, then it's probably more a matter of BSPlayer not recognizing the xvid codec, not a problem with your export in general. (I've never even heard of BSPlayer, heh.) VLC is very handy for watching whatever you need, so unless you need to watch it in BS for some reason, just keep opening it with VLC. If you do need to use BS, then I recommend using a different codec, probably a version of Divx.

Wow, div3. It's like 1999 all over again.

I don't know why the file has div3 as it's FOURCC (four letters that identify the codec) but you can change this in the xvid advanced settings. Change it to DIVX or XVID or DIV5. Like so:

DIV3 is the code for the old old old old Divx ;-) 3.11 codec. You don't want to use that.

These are options you need to set in Ulead. It's a problem with your avi file, not with bsplayer.

You could save uncompressed and then use a prog like auto gordian knot to choose the file size you want. It's easy to use, and I got a 7.5gb uncompressed avi file rendered to a 50mb (xvid) in about 11 minutes.

I was about to suggest similar :o) I always render my files to NTSC DV or NTSC DV Widescreen (depending on source) and that produces a 1GB file, which I then compress in Windows Movie Maker. It makes really nice-looking wmvs.
