[identity profile] remcoman.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] vidding_livejournal_ark2
Dear vidders,

I'm a student from the Netherlands who is currently working on his final exam project about video mashups/ remixes. My current interest is video mashups in its broadest form. This can be a fan vid but also a political mashup, trailer mashup and something called machinima. My goal is to create a advanced community site were amateur filmmakers can create there own video remixes, share sources, communicate with other filmmakers, have video remix contests (like the photo edit contests on worth1000.com) etc.

The goal of this survey is to get a better understanding of the vidding community and to use the results to determine the features of the final website.

This survey consists of nine multiple choice questions and it probably takes you less then 10 minutes to complete.

You can find the survey here: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB227NNE4268L

Thank you for participating!

(By the way feedback on how to improve the survey is also appreciated! :-D)

Just completed the survey. Your idea for a community sounds intriguing. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

As for improving the survey, in the question about how important different aspects are, the term "quality" is kind of vague. Did you mean technical quality (like playback quality or encoding) or how well the vid is put together?

I saw a vid on some video site (YouTube, DailyMotion, Imeem) and this brought me into contact with the vidding community.

This is not a criticism, but I found it interesting that the only option of how one became involved in vidding by seeing other people's fanvids was then followed by "on some video site (YouTube, DailyMotion, Imeem)." I'm sure since you're studying this subject that you're probably aware that fanvids have a much longer history than YouTube (and other streaming video sites) and even pre-date the internet--really since the 1970s. And when the internet did come about were originally distributed on it by people's individual websites (that's how I discovered them). YouTube/streaming is a very recent component to vidding. I hope I don't sound condescending, I just wasn't sure you were aware of this by the phrasing of the multiple choice options.

Anyway, the site sounds like it will be interesting. Good luck with your project! :)

Originally my idea was to do something with the subject video mashup/ video remixes. This is a really broad subject which also covers machinima and political mashups. I only recently became aware of the existence of vidding which i see as a form of video mashups. (i read a interview with a fan on http://nymag.com/movies/features/videos/40622/)

I didn't know that fanvids had such a long history. Do you know if there are still a lot of fans active from those old days?

Not the original commenter, but yes, a lot of fans who made vids pre-Internet are still active now. It's not "a lot" in comparison to everyone who is making vids and mashups now -- the change in technology has made vidmaking much more accessible -- but there is still a fair number of us around & active in the fannish vidding community.

Stupid me

If i had read the interview on http://nymag.com/movies/features/videos/40622/ more carefully then i could have known that vidding had a longer history.

No, not stupid! I'm glad you're open to feedback. :)

I don't have time at the moment to track down more information for you, but I'll try to find some later.

Ooops! Thanks for the clarification. I usually read vvv in my friends page, so I forgot the distinction.
