The awards will be presented for videos pertaining to Angel the Series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Bones, Chance the movie, Firefly/Serenity, Smallville (Season 5), and Supernatural. (I DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTHER FANDOM, that means, NO Veronica Mars, NO One Tree Hill, NO Gilmore Girls, etc.)

What makes a competent vid?

 This is just something I've been thinking about lately, and I'm wondering what others' opinions are.  Loftier artistic considerations aside, what aspects of technique compose the baseline, the bare minimum for a competent vid?  What are the essentials?  What are the things a vidder should be able to do?

Is cutting on the beat essential?  Avoiding talky-face?  Getting the aspect ratio right?  Choosing a song that does not blatantly contradict the tone or content of the source?  Something else I haven't thought of?  And if a vid does miss out on the basics, what excellences can redeem it?
