BitTorrent, a name that has become anathema to the major movie studios, which have accused it of facilitating Internet piracy, plans to launch the BitTorrent Entertainment Network that will sell legal downloads of films and TV shows from Warner Bros., Paramount, 20th Century Fox, MGM, and Lionsgate, the Associated Press reported today (Monday). Users will be able to rent new movies for $3.99, older ones for $2.99, and TV shows for $1.99. They can be viewed within a 24-hour period. Unlike the bootleg versions, the ones from the studios cannot be burned onto DVDs. Ashwin Navin, president and co-founder of BitTorrent told the A.P. that the studios had demanded BitTorrent charge prices for permanent downloads that the web service thought were too high. Navin told A.P.: "We need to give [customers] a price that feels like a good value relative to what they were getting for free."

Viacom's decision to yank 100,000 clips from its cable TV shows from YouTube has apparently had no effect on the video website whatsoever. In fact, according to research from Hitwise, YouTube traffic has soared 14 percent since the beginning of the month when Viacom demanded that the clips be removed. Moreover, according to the study, the number of people accessing YouTube exceeded the number accessing all of the television network websites combined, excluding the separate sites for individual programs like American Idol.

Promax/BDA, the advertising promotion and marketing association, is teaming up with The CW Network and creative marketing solutions company BLINK, to launch a competition for college students to create a commercial promoting CW drama Supernatural.

Titled Making the Cut and beginning March 1, undergraduate students will be able to visit the Promax/BDA Web site to obtain official rules for submitting entries. The promotional trailers can be up to 90 seconds long. Participants will be provided with program footage.

Promax/BDA and CW officials will select the finalists and feature their work at a June conference sponsored by BLINK, whose Seth Berkowitz initiated the contest idea after participating in and winning another Promax/BDA competition.

I want to point people to a few vidding news items:

1. Sweet Charity Auction is now open - each year [personal profile] lithium_doll organizes a charity auction where vidders, artists and other fans sign up to offer a fan produced works for charity. Phase 1 (where vidders and artists sign up to volunteer) will start March 1. Stay tuned for the actual auction (wherein we bid on people and get shiny things, like the Supernatural vid milly did for me last year: Invisible Hands).

2. The weekly vidding newsletter is picking up more volunteers. I am doing a weekly Meta/Vid Rec/Vid Review  post every Weds. Someone has started collating all the Starsky & Hutch, Due South, Pros, Sentinel and HL  vids posted every week. To watch/friend the newsletter go here. There are other weekly newsletters (ex Stargate Atlantis )and many other fandoms - all here. Please  feel free to forward info on the newsletter to fandom specific LJ communities or mailing lists (and note: you do not need to be a LJ user to read these newsletters. You just need to have the newsletter link).
