newbie question

i've never vidded before, but yesterday i downloaded sony vegas movie studio and started fiddling around with it, and once i figured out what was supposed to be happening, i realised it wasn't reading the video off of my .avi files, only the audio. some files work, but the majority don't. when i'm using the explorer window, the difference b/w the ones that work and the ones that don't is that when highlighted it will list some of the properties of the video and audio, but the cranky ones only list audio while the video text says: stream attributes could not be determined. is there something i can do to get it to read the files correctly, or is there something else going on i'm not aware of? i couldn't open the files at all with adobe premiere, and windows movie maker kind of, well, pisses me off even though it will read the entire file.
