Newbie question on codecs

I'm a total noob, so spare with me!
I have ripped my DVD, done all the decoding and encoding and what not and then tried to open up the movie in Windows Movie Maker, but when I import the movie, I get an error message saying the file "cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer."
I asked my friend who told me to download G Spot, which I did, and G Spot says the codec is installed, but I still get the error. Does anyone know what's going on or have any suggestions as to how to fix this? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
