Choosing software: Elements, VideoStudio or Vegas?

I'm a complete vidding virgin, and I'm having problems deciding which editor to buy. Premiere Pro is too expensive, but having eyed up the software at Amazon, I can afford Premiere Elements 2, Sony Vegas Movie Studio +DVD 6 (Platinum Edition), or Ulead VideoStudio 10 plus.

It only takes a quick scan of this community to figure out that many people use Premiere (therefore, presumably, there will be more people able to help when it all goes pear-shaped), but I would very much appreciate your ideas on which would be the best purchase - in terms of things like: which gives the most bang for your buck, which software is most user-friendly and idiot-proof, which is least buggy, which gets along okay with subsidiary software (like VirtualDub etc.).

How to convert .VRO to .AVI??

So I got a DVD recorder so that I could get my VHS home videos into my computer, into MovieMaker. 

The problem is that I've transferred from the VHS to DVD and finalized it. The format it does so is in .VRO
I need it to be in .AVI, or at the very least, .VOB What free software do you recommend (that doesn't end up crippling Windows MovieMaker 2).
