Codec comparisons for smooth Vegas editing

After lots of traipsing through the memories I think I understand enough to be able to ask a question that doesn't sound like gibberish.

The basics:
I use DVDDecrypter to get my vob files.
I like to use Vegas Video version 4 to edit.

What I need is the step(s) in between.

I was using DVDCopy to convert my vobs to mpeg2s. But found out quickly that Vegas didn't like mpegs. Then I found a wonderful post in the memories, and it leads me in the right direction but I need just a bit more guidance.
