So, OK.

I made one vid. Five years ago. (dear lord, FIVE!) And I loved doing it, but at the time I had insurmountable vid-capture technical issues (the skipped frames, DEAR GOD) and had to stop.

I'm starting to feel the bug again, and I have hopes that now in this world of DVD ripping and such, I might be able to take it up again without too much capital outlay.

My setup:
Win 2K
AMD AthlonXP 2500+
1.5 gig RAM
Video card: ATI Radeon 9200
40gig free space on my first secondary hard drive, 15gig on my second
And I think I still have my CD of whatever version of Adobe Premiere was current around 2001-2002 (6, or 6.5, IIRC).
Adobe Photoshop

To start out, I would primarily be doing Due South vids, from the DVD source. Possibly at some point also Doctor Who and Sentinel (when I get my hands on the DVDs.)

I know that at the very least I need to obtain the following:
A DVD drive for my computer (I know, step into the late 90s, Laura!)
DVD ripping/encoding software
And I think Premiere should be fine for editing and output, unless I need something in a funky codec.

So my questions are -
(1) Will my mostly-five-years-old setup deal with vids from ripped DVD source without making me want to die (at least any more than is usual while vidding)?
(2) Is anyone working with a similar setup and can share recs for their favorite (please freeware please) software for the ripping, cutting ripped video into manageable bites, etc?
(3) Will my old version of Premiere handle the newfangled codecs that exist for creating and working with AVIs that aren't ten million gigs?
(4) Any suggestions for *specific* codecs I should look for? The last time I vidded, DivX was bleeding-edge and hard to find.

Thanks!
Laura

Song: Bring Me to Life
Artist: Evanescence
Fandom: n/a ... or possibly Evanescence
Summary: "dedicated to our waking nightmares"

http://athena.adwin.ca/project/video/38/

This vid is about three years old now and was originally created for a DV class I was taking as part of my computer animation diploma program.

Prior to the assignment I hadn't even heard this song before, but I was struck by the lyrics "Wake me up // I can't wake up"... so that's the spin I took. From the instructor we were given the original Evanescence music video as well as a live performance of the song on Jay Leno. I supplemented this with footage from two documentaries -- "After the Warming" and "Untold Stories: Canada on September 11th".

Comments are welcome. Please enjoy.
