Since more and more vidders are putting their vids out on DVDs, I thought I'd put together a list of things I'd like to see on a DVD announcement. For those of us who have been handing out our vids since the days of VHS tape (note: I did not say: "since the days of stone knives and bearskins"), the list should be familiar.
DVDs By Mail
If you are planning on handing out DVDs by mail, here are a few thoughts on what to include in your announcement:
1. A brief overview of how many vids/fandoms and/or a playlist
2. If you have the vids online, perhaps a link to your website so people can test download a few
2. Cost/Shipping (if applicable. Usually just materials costs. Some fans give DVDs away for free)
3. Mailing/payment instructions (if applicable).
4. When can people start requesting copies/are there limited quantities.
5. Contact address (important if you're posting this in a LJ community - so people don't have to track down your LJ and then search for a contact e-mail.)
Edited to add:
6. Internationally available?
7. DVD format.
I wish there was the perfect example of a DVD announcement. I have my website DVD announcement (this is too much detail for a post, but it gives some ideas). http://www.morgandawn.com/dvd_copies.htm
Edited to add: tzikeh offers her LJ announcememt as a sample: http://www.livejournal.com/users/tzikeh/209475.html
Of course, an e-mail/post with a link to your website that has the above info is also good.
Basically, think of what you'd like to see when you're deciding on whether to get a copy of something - basic info plus as few as clicks as possible.
2. If the DVDs will be at a convention
For the con announcement, perhaps go to the convention mailing list and announce the DVDs there as well. Also, tell people where they can find the DVDs (in the dealer's room, will you have your own table or will they be handed out of your room).
Would there be anything else people/fans think we might want to add? And note: this is what I'd like to see - I am certain some would like more and some would be happy with less. YMMV.
Edited to stress: this is not a business or a profit venture we're discussing. Just fans sharing copies of their vids, similar to fans who put them online or write fan fiction -- all for fun. There are strong ethical and legal reasons fans should not be making a profit off of their fan creations. If you want to discuss the legality of creating fan fiction//fan vids, please start another LJ entry.
