A Little Advice

Well I I have been a little comfused and thought this was a place where I can get my questions answered.

Ok - I am ripping DVD to get source material for my vids. What I want to know is what format should I save the files in so that I can edit them mpeg or avi or something else. Like everyone else I want to keep the quality reasonable but the file sizes as small as possible.

Is it better I vid in mpeg then finally convert to AVI or WMP or this there other alternatives that work just as well.
