help?
Okay, I'm trying a new post in the hopes that some nice techie person will come to my rescue. I did everything
sineala suggested, and with all her patience and help (thank you), I'm still stuck.
After running SmartRipper and using DVD2AVI, this is the error message I receive when I try to open the file in Virtual Dub:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'vifp' (unkown). Virtual DUb requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Direct Show codecs are not suitable."
Any ideas?

Sounds like you've already figured out Smart Ripper so I'll just add in one tip. If you are ripping only individual chapters click on "settings" and under "file splitting" select "every chapter". If you are ripping an entire episode select "every .vob file". This way you don't wind up with two .vob files for a single scene that cuts oddly in the middle if chapter ripping. And you don't wind up with 15-18 .vob files if you are ripping by episode.
Once you've got your .vob files, open FlaskMPEG
Select "file--->open file" and then go to the directory where you stored your .vob files. If you are only ripping an individual chapter (and used the file splitting option above) you should only have one .vob file. Select and open it.
Now go to "options--->select output format and check 'avi output'"
Next step "option--->output format options". Select the video codec you wish to use by clicking on the 'select codec' button. I favor DivX 5.02 for nice compression and high quality myself. You can adjust the settings of your codec by clicking on "settings". Unless you absolutely need dialogue for your vid...don't bother selecting an audio codec because you won't be processing audio. If you do think you might need audio then using an MP3 codec is your best option compression wise. Once you've selected your codecs click 'Ok'
Now go to "options--->global project options"
Under the 'video' tab select the width and height you want your finished file to be (320x240 works well), and the frame rate (29.97 works best on Buffy DVDs in my experience).
Under the 'audio' tab select "do not process audio" unless you have a good reason to do so. processing audio just makes for bigger files and the need to cut the audio out when you go to vid.
Under the 'file' tab select the place you want the final file to go and name it.
Under 'general' make sure "compile whole file" is checked.
Now select "Run---->start conversion"
That's it. Go read a book, pet the dog, paint your nails, twiddle your thumbs...whatever...it's gonna take awhile. Once it's done processing you should have a fully functioning .avi file of reasonable size to work with in your video editing program. Delete the .vob files off your hard drive. And you're set.
Hope that helped!!
