Coming from [livejournal.com profile] yhlee's rec, and this is *very* cool -- Spike character vids have been done so much that there was a real barrier to entry for me, and this blew me away regardless. I think it takes off at "movies only make me sad" and just steamrolls from there, but the slower intro is great build to there. The intercutting against the chronological order keeps me interested and excited all the way through, the way I'm getting both stories at once -- the relationship and its collapse at the same time. Terrific clip choice from a visual standpoint all the way through -- each shot is just laden with contextual meaning, and because they're all visually distinct, I can follow them easily. The transitions between the sections, bringing the next 'woman' in on the end of the previous section, are also great, and make that final shot a slam-dunk.

I have yet to sit down and tell you how much I enjoyed "Protection", and now you have this wonderful vid out too!

Fantastic cutting and intercutting especially. Seeing it all in order on a large scale, and in jumbled order in the specific sections, really kept me guessing and excited to see what would come next. I think my favorite section was the William one. I've never seen that footage displayed like that before, and I love how you wove together those scenes, and they set up the rest of the vid really well.

Also really enjoyed the doll comparisons in the Dru section, and the impact of the cutting when you get the bathroom scene in the Buffy section, especially intermixed with the motorcycle shots. Oh, and when Buffy picks up her head and looks at Spike from the porch!

Very very nice work. :D

I loved this. The editing worked perfectly with the music, the faster pace on the faster musical sections was beautifully done and the song choice was perfect. I think you've nailed a lot of the reasons Spike is interesting and ambiguous in one very sharp vid.

Oh wow, this was great. Everything was wonderfully meaningful and it's well worth re-watching (I'm getting more on each re-watch). I'd never considered looking at Spike so much through the women he loves and loses at various times, but it's now so obvious and telling after seeing what you've put it together to these lyrics. Spike latching on to women again and again for identity/purpose. Well, actually, your summery says it all. This is also the only thing I've ever seen that makes me think that Spike's sexual assault on Buffy makes sense (and wasn't just a flub by the show's writers). You didn't gloss over anything--including the slayer he killed as well as the women he's loved.

The "intro" of Buffy was really striking and memorable, as she looks up from the porch, and I liked her unstoppable dancing in the red top set along to "like a summer rose". Felt meaningful, not hokey or a stretch. I liked how it paralleled the earlier bit with Darla earlier as well. So many good bits where the scenes played off each other and/or the lyrics. Really an entertaining and thoughtful vid.

The ending is killer.
