Help?

With an effect in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxa_YxoVj6A

I wanna know how to do the effect that was used a lot in that video, the parts where there were 2 scenes overlapping each other. I kiiiinda did it once in a video but I don't think I did it the correct way(I just guessed) cuz it didn't look nearly that nice lol.

Also does anyone know any places where I can get the overlays like that for videos? I'm always looking for good ones but I can't seem to find any.

So yes, if anyone has/can make any tutorials or something for that effect, it'd be great.

I use Sony Vegas 8

Thank you!!

Youtube is great for looking up tutorials for Sony Vegas 8. I'm still learning a lot of techniques and things I can do with the program. That vid uses some amazing ones, I must say. If you search youtube for sony vegas tutorials or just video overlay tutorials you'll find a couple very useful ones.

I don't think you need any tutorials, it's pretty simple: you just have to put the clip you want to use as overlay on top of the other clip. then you set the upper video track on "lighten" (use the "Compositing mode" button to your left).

and for the scratchy effect you have to use textures. just google "grunge textures" or smth like that, and there are plenty of LJ communities like [livejournal.com profile] texturize.

I had the same question as the OP, so yay for your answer, which worked like a charm when I tried it on a couple of random clips in a new file, but now that I'm trying it in my actual video, every time I click on lighten with the just the track highlighted that I want to be the transparent overlay, it "lightens" my entire timeline so that nothing actually changes and my overlay remains opaque. Any idea what I've done wrong?

I hate learning new software, sometimes. *headdesk*

it will lighten all the clips you put on that track, because this is what you told Vegas to do - the effects you add to the box on the left will apply to the whole track. make another video track and drag there everything you don't want to put on lighten - this is what everybody does.
I know there is a way to set only one clip on lighten/darken/etc. without changing the properties of the entire track, but I'm too lazy to figure it out. you should ask someone else about it.

Thank you so much. I'll try that and see if I can get it to work. :)
