I have question, about Adobe Effects. What is Adobe Effects used for, per say in a vid? I know some vidders use it, I know in part it's to create motion graphics(am I wrong)? Apologies if this has been asked before.

I'm no expert on AE -- still definitely consider myself to be in the process of learning it and picking up new ways to apply it in vidding as I go. Thus far, I've used it for opening titles, ripple effects (the effect controls were a lot more precise than what Premiere had to offer) and speed ramping (when you want to be able to vary the rate of speed of a clip over time, rather than just doing a flat percentage speed change).

With the version I now have of AE, yes, I can import the whole Premiere project. But before I upgraded, I couldn't. I had to do rough cuts in Premiere, and then I would render out small sections (uncompressed or with Huffyuv, so that all the swapping around wouldn't eff up the quality) that I wanted to work with in AE...render back out afterwards and then back into Premiere. Kinda tedious, but I'm good at making things tedious ;) Really, since I was only using AE in spots, it wasn't all that awful.

Your questions aren't clueless! I wondered the same things. AE's learning curve is a lot steeper for me that Premiere's was, but I have to learn new stuff or die of boredom...I think I'll be working through AE tutorial books for quite a while :)

After effects is used to do things like rotoscoping, where you can mask out clips over layers of video like you would a still image in photoshop. You can see an example of it in my vid Colorblind (http://blackbird-films.com/musicvids/veronicamars-colorblind.zip) Think of the movie Pleasantviller where the world was black and white but then one person was in color. That's rotoscoping.

You can also do green screen type stuff where you put somethign in front of a different moving background (not just a still photo) and you can do more complicated picture in picture stuff where you map points to a moving image so you could make like one of thos pictures in Harry Potter where it's in a frame but it's moving, and the frame is tilted at an angle, not straight on.

After Effects is great, you can do alot in it, but if you don't have a lot of RAM it will take forever to render things.

So not my fandom, so some of it passed me by, but wow - what a cool vid. I love the way you've used the colour and black and white - did it take you long to do?

Yeah it took a while. First I had to come of with the concept and make the whole vid without any effects. Then I had to export each clip with a color effect into after effects separately then apply the color effects the the layers mask and keyframe veronica and then export it out of after effects and back into my editing program. It was a couple weeks of solid rotoscoping.

If you watch my latest video of "the Internet is for porn" there are 2 shot there that I couldn't have done without After effects both are Obi wan looking at screens, one is a still image put into the video, the other is video of Oola dancing from Return of the Jedi on his screen.
