Okay - there are several ways, depending on which software you have or which dvd players you have. The *easiest* way is to buy a Norcent for about $40, which will play dvds with .avi files burned on them. Then you don't have to do a lot of converting and splitting and formatting.
Other than that, if you have QuickTime Pro and DVD Studio Pro, you can do it a number of ways, but DVDSP is very expensive. If you can tell me what you *have* in the ways of software, I can help you further.
I have a PC, so don't know how helpful I'll be, but I use Sonic DVDit! It will take .mov and .avi files and convert them to dvd. You can make a menu with preview clips of all your vids and link them to the menu and all that fancy stuff. It's quick too.
If you're not originally working with "uncompressed avis" the quality will not be very good, but you can convert them to dvd using Adobe Encore DVD (also burns to dvd) or Nero to burn to dvd. There's tons of software out there that can do it. DVDrhelp.com may be a good start for a beginner.
