Warning About Sendspace

Cross-posting from my personal journal:

PSA: My computer is currently infected with a Trojan virus I'm almost positive I got from downloading a vid from Sendspace. I just thought I would warn others about a possible source of infection.

I am currently running the anti-malware software that someone in my comments suggested: http://talitha78.livejournal.com/184561.html .

I've had someone tell me this happened to them as well from downloading one of my vids from sendspace, and as it did not come from my vids themselves(i checked them all with an antivirus program to be sure) it has to be from sendspace! I've since moved all my files elsewhere.
Never fun, hopefully you can get it taken care of.

There are a lot of ways sites can be compromised, but the most common is through their Adverts. Anyone can hack into the Advert and exploit a flash vulnerability or the like and any one who loads that ad is at risk of infection. Be sure your flash is updated and run Firefox's NoFlash or something to stay extra safe. :)

Yeah, it's a huge problem. Saw something about it here...

Java might to blame, I think. Be sure to update that.
Running Malwarebytes on your own probably won't get rid of Vundo, BTW, but the guys at various tech help forums seem to be able to help people remove it.

FWIW, I have a paid account with them, so I just emailed to ask them what's up. I don't know if this affects paid users - if it's something slipped into ads, it might not, because I don't believe paid accounts are ad supported - but I'll report back if I hear anything useful.

I have McAfee Security, which let Vundo and others through in the first place the other day. But today it downloaded some updates and started zapping Vundo right away. Then I downloaded the latest Malwarebytes update and ran it and it found Vundo again and deleted it with some needing to finish deleting on a reboot. After that everything seems to be fine, so hopefully that's the last of it. I've just updated Firefox and am about to update Java since that's probably where I got into trouble.

Oh no, I JUST made an order online... I'm not so tech savvy at all so I'm just wondering could the virus retrieve any credit card information? :X I'm a little worried right now
