So, I found this rather interesting. On a mailing list I'm on, another member posted an e-mail he'd just gotten from Youtube. The gist of it was that their filtering system figured out that one of his videos uses music owned by UMG (Universal Music Group).
The kicker is this: The message also said that the video would stay put because UMG has an agreement with Youtube to allow users to upload videos that have UMG-owned music. The catch is that Youtube will forward to UMG the video's view stats (big deal) and that the video's page will have ads (I presume for UMG -- again, big deal).
Maybe this is old news for some of you, 'cause I did a guick Google and found this press release from 2006 that implies such an agreement.
So...if you want to upload vids to Youtube and not have to worry about them yanking them, you're probably safe using something from UMG. Granted, I don't suppose the same is true for their film division.
